I hit a deer. my car is f**ked (long)

I was on my way home from school for the weekend at about 7:30 and i was traveling east on 66 into DC. Just cruising along driving. Not messing with my cell phone or changing CDs or anything. I can't really remember the details but basically i hit a deer @ 70 mph.

I think i was in the right lane and i came up over a little crest and right on the other side were 2 deer. by the time i saw them they were literally only 10 or 15 feet in front of me. i think i only hit 1 of them but im not sure. going 70 mph i think i hit the deer before i even got a chance to touch the breaks (im kind of glad i didnt hit the breaks because if i had the nose of the car would have dipped down and she probably would have done through my windshield). my hood unlatched and flew up, both airbags deployed. i was still going 50+ mph but i couldnt see where i was going because of my hood and all the air bag smoke. i cant find my glasses. they flew off somewhere in the car. the hood is ****ed. the radiator is ****ed. the front bumper is ****ed. my license plate is ****ed. my headlights are ****ed. i took pictures but my adapter cord for the computer is back at school so ill post them on tuesday when i go back.
i'm fine. no air bag burns or anything. im just upset that i killed a deer and p*ssed that my 3 month old car is so messed up. i took pride in my new car smell too. now it just smells like air bag crap.

some kind of weird things that are really eery to me now that this happened:
-yesterday i was going through my wallet and i deceded to put my AAA card up front just in case i needed it....yeah i needed it.
-today as i was leaving i was about to walk out the door but i decided to grab my digital camera "in case something happens"...
-i was orignally going to go home tomorrow morning instead of tonight. thats what i told my parents. i was debating "should i call and tell them im on my way home? or does it matter?" and my answer to myself was "i should call them so they know in case something happens to me"...

whatever. just coincidences or however you spell it. normally i'd look it up but i dont feel like it right now. anyway, i just thought some people might like to read the story. im still gonna get those Volks but i guess i'll have to wait a while to put them on. and me and Jason (Cutlr7) were going to put my FSTB and RSB on this weekend but we cant do that now. not going to get to go to the track this friday anymore either. i guess ill have to live with my crappy 15.3 for a bit longer. i'm more disappointed more than anything else because i had made so many plans for the next few weeks that involved the car. oh well. the end.

Man, what a drag...

At least you weren't hurt (esp. considering lack of visibility and such!). A car can be replaced or repaired (I know, i got T-boned about 6 months ago with my 98 SE... car was gone for a month

And you'll still be able to use your sway/ftsb/volks

no, but my uneducated estimate would be around 4k or 5k. at the very least i need the airbags to be replaced, a new hood, 2 new front fender panels, 2 new headlights, new grill, new bumper, new radiator. probably other stuff i cant see and dont know enough about to make a worthy estimate.

Sorry to hear about your accident. . . It is amazing how often people hit deer, I hear about it all the time at work (I work for a rental car agency). Hopefully they can put it back together, but I am guessing that $5K is a little low of an estimate. . . I think it will be $4k just for the airbags. From what I sounds like it may be closer to $8k just because of all the panels that need to be replaced and repainted on a very new car but I wouldn't be suprised if it is more. Good luck with everything and it is good to hear you are ok.

I would say that your more in the range of 6-8k. Airbags usually run around 800-1000/piece, Hids are going to be about 1k (nissans price) hood, fenders, bumper, grill, radiator and hours of labor and paint....

How about your winshield?? The hood flying up didn't hit your winshield or roof??

Sorry man, maybe have them get you a stillen or other aftermarket front end.

Glad you are okay. Yeah, the damage is probably in the upper 4 digits. Anyways, good luck with the Insurance now.

B.t.w, did you file a Police Report? At the scene or later?

damn man, i know your paiun and tru like 10k with teh air bags. i needed everything you need minus the air bags and a radiator and it was 7k. yup that's right and then add 1k or so for each bag. almost 9-10k i'd say. it's gonna be pricey thank god for insurance.

<-- Ding! Ding! We have a winnar! Seriously, cars can be replaced. You can't be.

I've had the unpleasant experience of hitting a deer. Contents of his tummy and bits of him ended up all over the car. (60mph impact on dark freeway..) Wet streets... had the choice of hitting him or a ditch.

Things learned:

1) Dead deer smell very bad.
2) Found bits o' Bambi in the air filter a couple of months later.
3) No, the deer are not glaring at you. They don't know you killed one of their kind.

i had a similar accident on my 98SE. i T boned a guy who ran a red light perpendicular to me.. They replaced the hood, both front fenders, bumper, all lights, radiator, and they had to get new parts for the frame up front because it was bent sideways.. oh yeah and also the driveshaft got knocked out of the transmission and the fluid all came out. the total estimate was about $7k. they are in the process of fixing it now and they say it should be as good as new.. i hope

Ryan...sorry to hear about the misfortune. Everyone is right though, at least you made it out uninjured. Sucks that you wont have your car and be able to put on the new mods, but at least youll be around to put them on when you get your car back!

Good luck man

I feel for you, I know the sick feeling of hitting one. I have had the misfortune of hitting 3 fricken deer. I have had my max for a year now, but I live in one of the highest deer count counties in the US. Waupaca County, Wisconsin. I moved out to Arizona in August, but I am moving back for good in a week, so I will be back to taking it easy. I used to have these deer whistles on my car, they worked pretty good, I never hit a deer with them on, but they look pretty dumb.

okay from the what you all are saying i guess my estimate was way low. maybe 8k+. i just went back and looked at in the light and i have to add a new air box, a new driver's side fog light, and a new engine cover to the list. and my "trip" button broke off of my steering wheel when the airbags blew. and i found a little solinoid or however you spell it on the passenger floor. not sure what that goes to. ive never had my car damaged like this before. any guesses to how long a body shop keeps a car with this kind of damage? i know you havent seen pictures but any round-about guesses?

time to order parts, time to put in the hours of labor, repainting, etc...i'm guessing about 2 weeks?...or i could be way off, who knows?

Sorry to hear that man. At least your ok. No big deal, as long as you have a good body shop doin the work your fine. Now's the time to get a body kit or some other cosmetic feature. It'll make ya feel a little better. That's what I did when I had my acc.

Sorry about it. Dont forget that maybe the engine shifted and there will be more damage then you think. Make the body shop have a higher estimate so you could through a body kit on right away and few other mods while its in the shop. Good luck.

i have a SMALL dent ion my hood right on the edge,. im being charged a deductible and i tole them to just pull the edge out and f it and save me 300-400 bucks and not pay my deductible. now if i get that second headlight that "ya it's scratched, i need a new one" i'll come out a few hundred ahead and that will pay for the bra install. cool huh.

you seem like you've got a good idea about how the insurance stuff works. i really dont. how do people get "extra stuff" when they get their car repaired? i dont necessarily want exrta stuff but how is it possible? i just dont see how insurance companies will give you more than you actually need.
also, kind of a silly question. my glasses got bent when the airbags came out and knocked them off my head. will insurance cover something like that? they cost like $130

try it, i'm gonna get them to cover the 100 bucks to get my *** out of the ditch, to get extra stuff you don't fix everything or get money for stuff that isn't broke. like my passenger headlight is scuffed minorly, i got a new one out of it, the ship just never gets one and you have 700 bucks for a headlight you never got. i got money for a new good but i told them to fix the old one, it was so minor and i saved like 300-400 bucks.

sorry to hear about the car. i got into a pretty bad accident in the end of december..car was gone for like a month and a half - 2 months. my rear axle was bent, trunk couldnt close cause the bumper was squeezed in, both doors on the passenger side were gone, passeger side airbag, and my side around the fuel pump was all F(*ed up. Just take it to a shop that knows you somehow..they can definitely save you money cause its a pretty big job. negotiations always good i think its gonna run you around 8k

Helloo....Newman. (had to say that)

Sorry about the Max, looks just like mine minus the stick and tint. How much did it run you to get 35% tint? With summer coming I need that bad.
