I was thinking about possible mods for the Maxima and I thought about getting carbon Fiber driveshafts to save weight and make the car faster...

I was thinking about people like Don, Dave B., Mardigras, Nealoc, Turbo95, ect. who are real gearheads might benifit from getting one of these.

Would these have any type of benifits?

 

Why in the world would we need a CF drive shaft on a FWD car!?

 

FWD cars have driveshafts too if i remember correctly..

Before spending any money on CF drive shafts there is alot more bennefit in lightweight wheels, flywheel, rotors...

I think lightweight wheelnuts would help more.

CF driveshafts are sound just too fragile to me.

 

The 350Z uses carbon fiber driveshafts as standard equipment.

 

If we were talking about a CF driveshaft for an F-Body or some other RWD muscle car, I'd say hell ya. I've held CF driveshafts for F-Bodies and they weigh about 8lbs vs the stock steel peice that weighs about 30lbs. That's some pretty signifcant weight loss along with a much strong piece. For your info, GM has been using CF driveshafts on their pickup trucks since 96. The stuff is strong and safe.

BUT, we're talking about FWD which is a completely different. FWD uses two half-shafts. There is actually very little axle therefore there's little point in getting something like CF. I know it's been done before, but I don't think we have much use for it.

i wouldnt mind getting some custom driveaxles made. doesnt necessary have to be Carbon fiber but a stronger piece. if its carbon fiber driveshaft dont let FiberImages anywhere near it!!

On a RWD, I would much rather have a driveshaft spiral facture than have it snap in half. I've seen cars snap their driveshafts on a 1-2 shift and it's brutal. I've seen some cars lift off the ground. In some unlucky accidents, the driveshaft has been known to come up through the floor board.

I don't think a SC'd Maxima can pocess the power to snap a well-made CF axle.

I think that a shaft thats in a housing will fare much better than one thats in open air like our half shafts. They are too springy as well. I can see that being a great asset to our launches... we can call it the Coyote acme launch.. how do you work it with the splines for the tranny? I'm not flaming just trying to introduce other thoughts into this. I think that it might work in GT but this is real life. If you want C/F Drive shafts that will last a few days of driving, I think that your best bet is to wash your driveshaft and put some of that APC carbon fiber print tape on it.

I agree with the carbon fiber driveshaft being pointless of a maxima, but about the getting rid of the stereo comment... This doesn't really make sense. People buy new 'lighter' rims so there is less rotational weight, this is what replacing the driveshaft does... It isn't to lower the overall weight of the car.

Why not???? If lighter parts are used on the car, the overall weight is reduced. Hell, I'm 243pds and if a smaller and lighter person were driving my car it would be lighter.
