I went through this a while back when my car was in an accident. A 4th gen Maxima does have ball joints, and not only do they connect to the control arm, but they are part of the control arm.

So, replacing the ball joint is as simple as replacing the control arm. I think I was quoted a price of like $120 each from Nissan.

Whoa, not necessary. That is Nissan's preferred method of doing it, but you can buy ball joints seperately from an independent auto parts store. You can also rent one of those little tools that will press the old one out and the new one in. The only thing holding those things on are a nut, a clip and pressure. They cost $33 dollars apiece from Lappens, a discount auto chain in the Northeast and are manufactured by Moog. Vinipux and I changed his when we did his clutch. I'm going to change mine in the next few weeks as well. As long as your control arms are fine, you do NOT need to replace them.

Interesting. I was told by my body shop, Nissan, and others on the board that that wasn't the case.

Cool.

hey, I was going to post that hehe, yeap, everything said above is right, you can buy them from Lappens and then press them out, just don't use a fire torch and a hammer to do it, bad things will happen

Yeah, I'm guessing that now we know how to do it, it could be done in about an hour tops.

Fire + Grease + Pressure = BOOOOOOOOOM

How do the Moog ball joint compare to the factory ones

How is the quality of the Moog ball joint? Does the lower control arm have to come off to install them?

Not sure about quality on Moog Vs. Nissan. His car is autocrossed and mine is tracked and autocrossed and I'm not too worried about it. The lower control arm does not have to come off to install them.

Sealed, they appear to be a direct replacement
