Cutting STOCK Springs???

I know one or two people have cut their intrax but i dont know if any 4th gens have cut their stock springs??

i have weapon R coilovers now but the ride is soo bad its not even funny, so i wanted to cut my stockers and try them out to see what the ride would be like with my koni yellow adjustable struts.

anyone have any info on this besides saying cutting springs is bad and that weapon R is crap because i know both of these things.

Nothing bad or wrong with cutting your springs. Try cutting one coil only off first, and remember that it increases your spring rate. It will be a little stiffer. Somewhere out there is a formula for spring rates useing coil thickness/number of coils/diameter of coil. Can't remember it though. azhelipilot

BigSadler...

I know you like to hear from experience (which I don't have) so I won't make this long. Don't cut them too low or they can ruin the Konis. Yes that's right it can hurt the struts. I don't think 2 coils would be bad but any more and you would be bouncing around and I think even go back to the Weapon-Rs. But it's worth the try if you can do it yourself because getting them cut is what - $40? Or you can even do it youself with Jay25's method and if you can but the springs on yourself you're set. For some reason though, I don't think you'll like it. Most people prefer to cut Sprints and Intraxs.

Here is my opinion/suggestion/opinion, put your stock ones on, then look at the way they sit, if the top or bottom side the coils sit tighter together cut those off do not cut the ones that have alot of space in between them. Say you found the side that you want to cut since stock springs sit the car about 5 finger fender well gap trace a circle and half from top, and cut right there. Try it out and see if you like the ride. Not happy with the drop cut another half, but I would recommend quarters vice another half a coil. Just look at the top of the springs and look at the spring as a circle 360 degrees therefor you dont get confused. I called intrax prior to me cutting and also at the shop were I use to do my own work on my car the guy is a experience tech and also owns a dragster thats were I got my info from. I hope that helps Jaime!!!

a max owner around my way cut his factory springs and the drop was incredible. i never got to ride in it but i drove beside him and it didnt seem too bad. also he claim to cut only one coil, but to me it looked like two coils. no finger gap all the way around with factory struts/shocks.

You've got to understand something, it's not the springs that are making for your crappy ride. It's the drop. You've got only 2" of upward wheel travel when you've got a 2" drop. The lower you go the less wheel travel you have. The crap ride is from your car being too low, having little wheel travel, and bottoming out. That's just the way it is if you go low. There's no way around it. Cutting stock springs will not help. If anything, the ride will be worse because the stock springs are not progressive therefore they will bottom out much easier.

2 of my friends had their stock springs cut and the drop was sick!! but they also left the factory struts on too and that made their cars bounce all over the place. As long as you keep those Konis in im sure it would be ok.
Maybe go back to Intrax and cut them down a lil.

Please don't do this. I don't want to get into the specifics, but let's just say cutting your springs is "ghetto" and dangerous. Do a search.
