Which is faster, 2K2 3.5 Altima or Maxima

The 3.5 Altima is rated at 240 hp and the Maxima at 255. Anybody with a stock Maxima raced a stock Altima?

I have a friend with a 2K2 Chevy pick up that says he beat the Altima by a length and the Maxima by three. He didn't now if either were stock. He did notice aftermarket tires on the Altima.

Anybody know the difference in the the two engines? Why is the Maxima rated at 15 hp more? From my observation just looking under the two cars, the Altima appears to have a little better exhaust system.

The Chevy truck does have a few mods by the way!

altima's best run was a 14.7

Yeah I raced Altima 3.5 SE, it was probably an Auto. I beat him from the light and from the roll.

One win for Maxima and one for Altima.

Looks like their hp rating are somewhat misleading? They seem to be about the same?

Having test driven both, and now owning the Maxima, I must say that the Altima is slower. They might have had the altima post better times because they wanted to sell more, who knows. The Altima SE weighs 1 lb more in manual form and 12lbs more in Auto. It also has one less gear and 15 less HP. So, tell me, how CAN it be faster???? The driver and reaction times have a LOT to do with it.
In my honest opinion, the Altima is nothing more than a cheap maxima. Side by side the two cars are almost exactly the same. Step inside and you see where they cut some corners. The current 3.5 SE altima is your 2003 Max. The next gen max is going to be something VERY different.

Make that 2 wins for the Maxima.. One of my best friends owns a 2k2 3.5 Altima and I destroyed him off the line and in the long run this weekend.. When I first got my car he would beat me time after time, but since my car has been broken in I have been able to take him.. I WILL ADMIT THOUGH it is a VERY fast car

Not sure if the extra gear would mean anything in the 1/4 mile since the 6spd has 2 overdrives.

i have a 2002 altima 5sp both times i have been to the track I have ran a 14.3 95+ with intake.

when it comes down to a couple of tenths of a second It depends on the driver. these cars are to close.

The altima may have cheaper looking interior car, but atleast its something new to peoples eyes instead of that played out 5th generation maxima.

...I disagree. You don't have to flame. Unless you are a flamer... I have driven both and think they are both great cars. I bought a Max, but it was a close contest. Ultimately it was the interior quality, the 15 extra horsepower, and the great discounts... Won me over to the Max. I was also a little paranoid about buying a brand new body style and car, before they could 'work all the bugs out...' But that is just me. But I am sure auto or stick, these two in a race apples to apples will always be about the driver in each, they are that close. And yes, an auto driver can beat another auto driver based on better skill, especially in a high hp car with fwd and a gated shifter, I can row through the gears in my automatic better and quicker than the 'slushbox' can do it for me.

maimWhat I've noticed is that altima owners defend their cars and maxima owners defend their cars.

played out 5th gen Maxima? ~whew~ that's pretty harsh. I personally think both cars are great and I drove both the 2K2 Altima and 2K2 Maxima...but I really like the feel on the Maxima. Power wise they're both fast. (Although I really like that video of that 2K2 Maxima taking on the 2K2 Altima and the driver said "did you miss a gear?" ) anyway the point is, who cares what people think of your car. There will always be a better car out there. enjoy the ride.

Can you explain how you can say that a cheap interior is better then a played out one? Besides, calling the 5th Gen Max's interior "played out" is your opinion Everyone and their momz knows that the Altima interior IS cheap.

I much prefer the cheaper interior of the brand-new Mitusbishi Lancer to that of the played out Mercedes-Benz CLK430.

Would the cable shifter in the maxima and the rod shifter in the alty play any role in this?

The extra gear should help since it will keep the car more readily in the power band. At least, that's the theory.
