HubCentric Rings

OK, I have after market rims. Specifically 17 X 8 Konig Verdicts with Toyo Proxes 245/45/17 tires. I had the stock SE 17" prior to this.

I have a "vibration" that just seems to not permanently go away. Not a steering wheel shaking out of my hand, but a noticable (to me) shimmey. One thing I have noticed is that when they respin the tire and nothing changes on the rim/tire combo the ride DOES change on the car. This would lead me to believe that maybe hubcentric rings might be in order (I dont have them now). Something in the way the wheel gets mounted to the car seems to change the ride.

Question: Who has them installed and how much of a difference did it make and why did you install them in the first place?

I have been told the "vibration" is anything from bad balance, to it because its such a big tire (um do Vettes and Vipers have this problem? ) to there is no vibration at all.

Also, what are the best practices to tighten lugs on the alloy? I usually hand snug in star pattern and then lower the car and use torque wrench to "scientifically" finish the tightening process. SHould I be doing anything else or different? I tightent to 80 Ft-Lbs as the range is 77 - 85.

Any assistance that could be provided would be appreciated.

Dude...I have 19" RacingHarts and the Stillen big brake kit on my '02. The spacers I have on there now are not hubcentric. They are just standard spacers. We balanced the wheels 3 times and had their machine recalibrated...I STILL have the wobble. So, I am putting 10mm hubcentric spacers on there purchased from H & R. We believe this will resolve our issue. Maybe it will fix yours.

Thanks for the feedback, when will you be installing them? I am interested on how it turns out for ya.

The new spacers and bolts have fixed the wheel wobble. I guess that is what we were looking for!

Thanks for the info...what bolts did ya use? Was it required to use them or "just for good measure".

Also if you could tell me where ya got them. I searched for H&R and did not come up with much?

If you don't need spacers you shouldn't wast the money on H&R spacers. You just need the hub rings. You probably need a 73mm to a 66.1mm. They should cost no more that $10 for all 4. You don't HAVE to have hubrings, but it is a very good idea. Just go down to your local wheel shop and they should have them.

Guys, Do take note on how you tighten the lug nuts. It does make a big difference, trust me. If you tighten it in a circular pattern, the wheels will not be centered. You should tighten it in a star pattern; after one is tightened, move to the one across it, NOT the one next to it. Try this method first and see if it helps to solve the problems. Remember to use a torque wrench to prevent your rotors from warping.

If you've already done this and you still have the shimmey, I really don't know what to say. One more thing is that when I have my tires mounted and balanced, I saw the guy at the the shop (Exact Motorsport) balanced the wheels and put the wheel weight several times (on different spot of the wheels) to make sure that the wheels are really balanced and have zero "moment". I notice that most shops, like Costco, Wheel Works and Firestone, only spin each wheel once, put on the wheel weight and they are done with it.

Yeah, watch them balance your wheels if you can. My wheels have hubcentric rings, no vibration.

Just so I am stating things correctly, hubcentric rings are "spacers" that fit between the outer diameter of the hub and then inner diameter of the rim right?

Where can I get these. I am looking for something that leaves very little if NO space between the OD and ID.

Thanks

My 18s vibrate

I had real bad vibration. I put 2 front hubcentric rings on 2 weeks ago and it got rid of about 50% of vibration. Last week I went back and got 2 more rings for the back, which helped another 40%. It's almost not noticable anymore. Definitely get the rings. I'll rebalance the wheels and see if that takes care of the rest.
Peace

Yes, they press into the inner end of the wheel's bore.

I got mine from Discount Tire Direct.

My oz wheels came with metal hubcentric rings. Never had a vib problem. If you can get metal ones get them over the plastic ones.
