Y pipe or muffler First???
Y pipe or muffler First???
I want to get a Y pipe and muffler soon, but i probably wont get the 2nd one until a few months after the first. Which should I get soon? A guy who works on maximas said dont replace the stock muffler b/c the valve really does work, and its a $500 stock muffler and it's not a peice of crap. another guy says to get the muffler first because its silly to work from the middle to the back, and not the back up. he says i wont feel gains on the Y pipe if the exaust still has to blow through the stock muffler.
WHAT SHOULD I DO??? I'm not finding too many answers by searching.
Also, has anyone ever installed a Y pipe with the stock muffler? What are your experiences, and do you reccomend it? How is the noise level? Like everyone, i want a nice, deep tone. Subtle even... mabye...
How bout just replacing the stock muffler... any performance gains?

- lol j/k - get the y pipe of course if you want the performance - most people reccomend keeping the stock muffler if you would like a quiet ride - but if your looking for a deep tone, swap the muffler with a dual tip or canister style muffler

take my word for it, get the y-pipe trust me ull feel the gain. also no the muffler isnt crap, its good enough for a skyline remember... the muffler is more of a cosmetic mod the only thing ull get more power out of it the resonator it has a big crimp in it just throw in a stright pipe w/o resonator but leave the stock muffler on! if u want a aftermarket muffler ur gonna have to get a resonator cuz its just too damn loud. but thats just what i know, do whatever u fell suits ur needs best, but remember the noise issue, the stock muffler will keep thing quiet and ur not gonna lost power, on the plus side u get the sleeper look, no1 knows ur cars modded....

cattman
stillen
budget
Warpspeed also makes them but I dont know their website. That list also goes for price from most expensive to most affordable. I've got a cattman and have no no problem with the flex section and its been on for about 8 months. I had and have kept the stock muffler on and I have been real happy espically after adding a berk tech intake with the frakencar mid section.

Okay I will definatly go with the y-pipe... for you guys who have it... how was the performance increase? My main concern is performance... did you actually feel a difference?
And what does it sound like with a stock exaust?

I say, don't smack him, pop him in the mouth when you get the y- installed. As far as muflers go, members on these board have dynoed full catbacks at five, yes, five HP. You can get more HP out of a Stilling, yes Stilling Intake(eight HP). As far as the y-pipe go, they have been dynoed at roughly twelve HP. There is no question, do the y-pipe and intake.

Can you point me to the peoples dyno for the Y pipe?
So let me get this straight:
Stillen's Y has a bee in the can sound
Cattman has the same sound with a failing flex section
Warpspeed has no reported problems
Budget has no reported problems

Yes but I believe stillen/cattman are both mandrel bent.

mandrel bent = more hp
Oh yeah I forgot that the Cattman is SS and Stillen is ceramic coated. Are the budget&Warp made out of a lesser quality metal too?
y-pipes
BTW WarpSpeedPerformance offers mandrel and non mandrel y-pipes. As soon as Dallas' and our 2002 Maxima owners schedule mesh we will be offering one for the 2002 Maximas owners as well. This one will be in 304SS only with option of TIG and MIG welding. Same WSP low prices.

02 No y-pipe. Headers
There haven’t been many replies to my post from yesterday "Does an 02 need a new y-pipe".
But I think the stock pipe is a good design. With Headers that get rid of the precats and a new B-pipe we should get a good hp gain. The money saved could go towards a SC. For those of you that have a 02 take a good look at the pipe and let us know what you think.
