Are ALL Parents Like Mine ??

They are becoming rediculous about me spending any kind of money on my car. Im not in school till the fall because I kinda took a year off from going to college (well the truth is I went to Culinary school, and didnt like it...but thats not the point) and I have a full time job now making mad money and they want me to save all of it, put it all in the bank for repairs on the car and tires and brakes and school...granted I am saving enough for that stuff but WTF,,Im working two jobs, almost 60hrs a week and I can have a simple hobby like my car : ( he said alot of adults dont have the money for a hobby like mine...IM A KID ...
I really just wanted to vent and see if all parents are like mine...and the worst thing is that my dad likes every change to my car more than I do
I guess Ill try to hide everything from now on

As long as they are supporting you, you've got no real say. If you're 18+ and making "mad" money like you say, then it's probably time to move out of your parents house. Once you move out and you're on your own, then they can't tell you what to do.

IMO, there's nothing more sorry then a 20-something year-old living at home and throwing all his money into his car. There's quite a few guys in this org and elsewhere that do this. It's really sad.

I'm 27, but when my Dad came to Seattle last year to visit, I took him to a maxima meet. he thought it was the coolest thing since sliced bread.

When I told him I just spent $2500+ on a SuperCharger, he gave me a little lecture about how I should be marrying my girlfriend and buying a house, but he still thought it was neat.

Of course, he used to drag race back in the mid 50's....When "Cars were really Cars" <--according to him.

if you are still being supported by your parents in any way (school, housing, food), then either listen to them or move out and supoort yourself. once you're on your own and still have extra money to spend on your car got for it! my guess is that your mad money will be small money when you support yourself. to answer your question, my parents are like your's. i know they meant well at that time in my life. to answer your question, my parents are like your's. i know they meant well at that time in my life.

In short, no of course not all parents are like yours. Even though they help with insurance and all, my parents haven't given me too much grief about the things I've done to my car (I'm 19). At the same time though they know that if anything I did to the car resulted in any sort of damage, I'd have to pay for it. As long as what I'm doing to the car doesn't result in them having to pay anymore money, they don't (and really shouldn't) care.

Dave,

I kind of resent that. I'm 22 years old and I live at home because I commute to school. I have one more semester until I graduate and then I'm moving out and getting a REAL job. I have money saved up for when I move out and my extra cash goes to my car. My car is my hobby, and I don't think there is anything SORRY about me putting money into it.

I think Dave was refering more to guys who's lives aren't really going anywhere and when they should be more focused on getting out and making it on their own, they're just thriving off their parents and pouring all their cash into their car. Obviously there is nothing wrong with living at home if it truly works out for the better but I'd say in most people's cases they should be looking into getting their own place by the time that they're in their early 20's...kinda reminds me of george from seinfeld.

You're parents are right...save your money >>

Unless you've got a rich Mommy and Daddy who plan on leaving all their money to you, you're going to have to worry about the future. Ever look at the cost of a home thesadays? You're young, and you want to have some fun. Have your fun, but don't p*ss all your money away...put some away for a rainy day.

You know what? My parents used to be like that... Now, I'm finding that although my Dad thinks I could be spending the money better elsewhere, he's enjoying it too... The trick is, to get everybody else involved... I don't live at home anymore, (Married, own my own home...) but my Dad and I have spent some good times together discussing how my mods work, and what they do for my car. My wife is even enjoying it. My parents bug out on me too. I'm 24 work and go to grad school. Parents are always going to be parents. I should be out on my own buy now, but it's not bad saving on rent, and I'm actually saving up for a down payment on a townhouse or condo or something. The truth is I try to hide just about any mod that I do to my car. Even though they don't bug out as much anymore I still like to keep things to myself. They don't understand that it's more then just a car to me. Anyway if I was you I'd reccomend you start putting into your 401K and stuff like that so that you at leat save up something for yourself. good luck.

I don't think that's quite what Dave ment. There's a difference between your "extra" money going to your car when your living at home, and "all" your money going to the car.

I know people who live at home (out of college or not going to school) and don't have a single expense. Their parents pay all their bills, food, car insurnace, etc. They still put 100% of their money into their car. That's kinda sad. Save the money and move out!

That being said...I just moved home! Hopefully only for a few weeks though. My parents don't bother me about spending money on my car at all though. I make more than all three of them (stepmother included) combined and just bought a house. Now, if I were moving home, with no plans to move out, not saving any money, and spend thousands per month on my car...I'm sure they'd say something.

Albertt is right. It doesn't make sense to put "all" your money into a car. We love our Max's but the reality is that this is not an investment. Our parents have been here longer than us and are wiser. They are just reflecting themselves in you, remembering the same mistakes they made at your age. They just want you to make better desicions than the ones they made. Saving for your own home is far more important than saving for a supercharger.

My advise, Prioritize, make a balance in what you spend in the car and what you save for your future. Living with your parents is not a bad thing as long as you assume some responsibilities and start helping them as they have helped you.

My parents were like that at first. I'm 19 and I got the car myself, I'm paying for the car with my own money, and it's in only my name. So I understand what they are saying, but as long as I'm taking care of my responibilities, they shouldn't worry.

Re: Are ALL Parents Like Mine ??

Are all parents like yours? Most probably....but, your parents are being practical. I wish I had saved more of the $$$ I made in my early 20's and not blown it all on stupid **** (and trust me, I blew A LOT of $$$). Now, at age 31, I have been laid off 3x in a year, bought a townhouse, Maxima and am getting married in a few months. To have even some of the $$$ I had then would have been great!!!

Cars are a poor investment, overall. You never get back on it what you paid, and overall they are major cash hogs. That being said, I want to throw some bucks into my Max. When I recover from the shock of writing a large check for the downpayment on my townhouse and get a job I will throw some mods on my ride. Till then.....stock it is.

I think you parents are just trying to make you look a little bit into the future. Try to save even 10-15% of your take home every week- trust me, you will be soooooooooo glad you did in the future.

Re: Re: Are ALL Parents Like Mine ??

yeah, my parents are the same way, and I can understand where they are coming from...they had it a little rough growing up, and where they are now, was from lots of hard work and dedication...and I'm just grateful they gave me my car, and a wonderful car at that for a 16 year old...so mainly my car is going to remain stock, except for a few minor things here and there, and a lot of money I hopefully make this summer will go into my savings

All who replied, are you orientals?

I'm 25, korean american, a software developer, pay for my car, BUT, live at home. Thats why I STILL hear crap from my parents sometimes. The way things are going, my parents are gonna nag me with every details on how I should raise my kids or how many times I should make love with my wife in a week. I'm not married btw.

Most of korean parents do not give their children any respect.

I agree.

Setup a budget. Like what is the % of your income goes to the car, saving for a house (or school)... show it to your parents to prove you can handle your finance, then they will stop the nagging.

BTW, if you pulling a lot of $$$, better put some into your retirement fund. Yeah, I know, you are young. But the earlier you start, the better of you will be when you retired. I wish someone taught me that when I was in college.

I don't even tell my parents about anything I've done on my car. As far as they know, it's stock (which it pretty much is at this time)

This is probably the best advice so far. If you get your parents/spouse/gf/whomever involved in your hobby, they will be much more likely to be interested or at least tolerant of it.

As probably the only person to respond that actually is a father, I can totally agree with your parents reasoning. My dad used to street race cars (back when they were real cars ), so he enjoys tinkering with me and I enjoy the time spent trading ideas. Even if some of his ideas are not up to speed, I just nod and smile and tell him I'll check into it. My point is that you really need to turn a negative into a positive. If you were to really show your parent(s) that you can buy the mod you want and STILL save money by either getting a really good deal on it or still physically put away more money then that would show the level of maturity that they are probably looking for. My wife even hated my car because I spent so much time tinkering with it. I took her to the track for the first time last week (she went kicking and fighting the whole way). At the end of the night, she was already telling me (when the cars launched) what their ET's were going to be. She was honestly excited and proud of how my car did and had adrenaline pumping all the way home (I even let her drive home and hit the N2O for the first time, and she liked it!).

BTW, it is never a bad idea to save money for a rainy day instead of a car. If you are really determined to put money into your hobby, don't complain when the sacrifice that has to be put forth hurts. It only shows your parents that you are not ready for substantially bigger hurdles yet to come. My long .02 cents.

hmmm mine do the same thing... but I dont live at home, and i'm not dependent on them

and what they say... about it being a waste of money impractical and all that I agree... but its my hobby thats why i do it, but I know its not the smartest thing to do

The Maxima has taken alot of my money but it hasnt prevented me from doing other stuff hehe (kinda) but if i put every penny into it i'd be one stupid person

listen to them they are right, but also listen to urself and try to work something out in between semi reasonable hehe

You're not the kind of guy I was refering to. Going to school and living at home is great as long as you can tolerate your parents If you pay for your car, go to school, and are SAVING money, there's nothing wrong with that. The guys that really bug me are the ones that are living at home, have low paying jobs, drive expensive cars with lots-o-mods, and pump all their money into their cars all the while bragging about their sweet ride. These guys just need to grow up.

I'm 19. I live at home and my father *****es about most things I do with the car. When I bought rims for my old 3rd gen max, he got *****y, then when I got a different set, he got *****y again.. when i tinted the windows he was *****ing that I'd get tickets or crash because it's impossible to see through them (20% ) oh well. He's cool, knows a lot about cars, helps me out a lot when i am working on something and run into a problem but when it comes to even little mods, he acts like a **** sometimes. lol. It's cool though.. whatever..

Hey buddy, join the club!

Most parents are like that, its just what parenting is, trying to teach your kids to be responsible.

I'm 17, Ive had my max for almost 2 years now, have put in around ~$2500 into the car.
My parents *****ed about everything I ever did to it. I persisted and got most, not all, of what I wanted. I went throught life this way, I begged and pleaded, they said no and a week later I forgot waht I wanted.
I earn chump change and thats why it took me so long to get anything for my car. I have bills to pay, I pay for my car, I pay for my credit card bill, I pay for lots of other stuff not counting college classes. Saving money is NOT an option right now, with the chump change I get paid even If I saved 10 bux every pay check, I would spend 10 times as much on bills.

The maxima doesnt get all of my money, but it gets some of it. I dont put in money here and there, I drop large amounts at one time. (To me large amounts is $400 or $500 bux)

To the people that say cars arent good investments...these days, what IS a good investment?

That 2ghz computer you just put together?

That PS2/XBOX/GC you just bought for your room?

That FUBU jacket you bought?

Those stupid $200 shoes you just bought and dont wear because they are too expensive?

Almost EVERYTHING you buy these days is NOT an investment of any kind.

Im not talking about savings accounts or IRA's or anything of that sort. I'm not talking about buying an apartment complex and charging the crap out of people.

Please, tell me what is a good investemtn these days???

Maybe a hobbie IS the investment, if you spend your money wisely, you could build that hobby into a career.

Ummmm A HOUSE!!!!! Come on people...

Oh well... I guess you'll understand why when you get tired of living at home...

Cars are THE worst financial investment you can make... PERIOD!
(Not that we're all innocent in this, but...)
