Aluminum Cooling Fans?

Yesterday my dad drove my car somewhere and when he got back he told me to grab a flashlight and a rag. He said that it started to overheat which my cars temp gauge has never read over half and he said it was up almost all the way. Anyway the right side cooling fan that comes on when the AC is on came off and was up against the radiator. I talked to a mechanic and he said that these fans were prone to coming off as the inside cracks and melts a little. Ok, so i went and bought another fan for $20 because the other one bent when it came off. EVERYONE should loosen their radiators and make sure that the bolt is tight for each fan. If they are loose you should probably put some thread lock on them. Sorry for making this so long, but on carparts.com you can buy those aluminum fans, does anyone have this and do you think they make any difference(carparts says increases mpg and power). thanks

I think you are refering to what is sometimes commonly called a flex fan. These are typically only used for applications where the fan is mounted directly on the motor's water pump. Typically these are used on american V8's. The idea is that the fan is really only needed at idle to move air because the car is standing still. As your RPM increases the blades flex so as to flatten out creating less drag and as a result robbing less horsepower and gas from your engine. If your car is moving, air is naturally flowing threw the radiator so the fan doesn't need to do it. These don't apply at to our electric fans.

is this what you are talking about?
