Brakes - dealer or another shop

I have to get new brakes soon (like by the end of the month). is the dealer the way to go or should i go somewhere like a midas or something?
only reason i ask is because i have the feeling of getting reemed by the dealer . . .

This reminds me of a question. I have heard - from Nissan - that most places use universal replacement pads and - according to Nissan -discard certain hardware bracket pieces to make those fit. Nissan claims that the result is sqeaky brakes.

Is that b.s.?

I will admit that after the local brake shop was unable to stop my wife's brakes from squeaking after they did a brake job (and after 4 visits), I took the car to Nissan and they fixed it without a problem - for a fee, of course. That's when they gave me that line.

Let me put it this way.

To install my big brake kit from Stillen A/P ...

1. Dealership wanted $900
2. Performance shop specializing in Nissan Z's wanted $250

All in CAD $

get it free from the TSB...tell the dealer that ur car shakes during high speed braking...and u believe that ur rotors are warped.

i thought about that, but i've got so many miles on my car (50k+), i know they'll say i'm past warrenty and probably won't honor the tsb. what sucks is that i noticed the shudder like 7 months after i had the car, but my dumbass didn't realize what it was. was told "it's probably just your ABS . ." from a friend . . . .

oh well....then I would just let the regular shop do it. dealer works will be good if ur car still under warranty.....eventhough u pass 36k...I would still let dealer do my engine/tranny work, so if there is anything wrong with it...they wont blame on the non-dealer authorized shop.

if your gonna go somewheres else besides the dealer, DO NOT GO TO ANY LARGE CHAIN like midas, pep boys, monro, jiffy lube, any of those. i work at an auto parts store and let me tell u something about those shops. they are kids working there who know nothing about cars. they call for parts and half the time they dont even know the size of the motor and probably cant even find out the size of the motor...its pretty sad...

get Nissan parts from Courtesy or other nissan dealers and do it yourself then there should be no fitment problems. Or bring those parts to your local mechanic or private shop if you don't trust dealers.

As for the hardware, I think they're just spacers, just like the grease that you put on the back of the pads... They probably act as something in between the pads and the calipers to shim/cushion the pads so they don't vibrate? maybe.. So as for the noise issue, that might be true, but I never had a problem with sqeeky brakes. Plus I've only had to get my brake pads changed one on my previous car, so I don't know too much about brake pad squeal. Usually that's from glazing (from improper break-in). As for your sig, no idea where it went.

They have good deals on brakes and it will be better stopping than the factory stuff(more prone to failure) and he will sell you what you need, not what you don't want to buy.

Give him a try and good luck!!

If your going to get new brakes why don't u get a whole new set up. X drilled rotors, pads, lines. Thats what i did. Not that much more.

The brake hardware that has been referred to are the metal spacers fitting directly between the pads and the caliper mount. Even with after-market or "universal" brake pads they can still be placed in the correct spot. I replaced my rotors with cross-drilled/slotted and cad plated. Along with that I replaced the pads with aftermarket axxis metal masters. I did not place the metal spacers in with the new pads to test for squeaking. But so far nothing. It really varies from car to car so that you will have to test. It won't hurt to put the metal spacers back in to ensure the quietness of the brakes, but with that you need the correct grease or lube. Replacing the rotors and pads are really easy. Instead of spending a couple hundred at a brake place you might want to consider doing them yourself. It doesn't require bleeding of the brakes. Hope I have been some help.

Oh and if you want some aftermarket cross-drilled/slotted cad plated rotors for a 2k or 2k1 Max I can get a pretty good deal on them. E-mail me at foodmanry@hotmail.com if you wish to inquire about them.

Do it yourself! Brake pads are really simple to install. See the how-to's for details. My friend and I installed axxis ultimates on his wrx 2 days ago. It was no problem.

btw...fu<k nissan dealerships.
