500.6 Miles on one Tank!

Everytime I get the chance to fill my car I always try to beat the most miles on a tank of gas. Usually I only get to a little over 400 before I fill her up again cause I don't want to risk getting stranded. This time however I was taking a long trip and when I returned home I was only 15 miles away from 500 miles. I drove around until finally she gave out just as I was pulling into a gas station. She stopped at 500.6 miles! Now I know it's not the best think to run a car dry but this was to close to 500 not to go for it. Has anyone else gotten this much or more on one tank of gas?

Re: 500.6 Miles on one Tank!

Man if you emptied the tank and got 500 miles that is like 28-29mpg. Not bad for a 10 year old car, its funny how nissan did advertise 500 miles on one tank for the 2k-2k1s. Good job.

Almost

I did 450 miles in one tank once, when I did the Cascade loop in Washington State. 500 miles is definitely doable. I just have to make a case for a long straight road trip to make it happen.

Cavitation

Running the tank dry can hurt the injectors and the fuel pump by process known as cavitation.

Wow:

I long to see 300 from a tank. I usually get 240-250 when I put my 15.xx gallons in. Has been like this for years.

I have a 91 SE 5spd. I averaged 27-28mpg on highway driving. I got 400 miles on my tank before the fuel light came on and then I filled up with 14.5 gallons. I was using 89 octane all the way for the trip.

Not to mantion all the crap settles to the bottom of the tank..run it down like that an all the sediment gets sucked through the pump, filters and injectors. Do this frequently and injector screens get blocked.

Re: Re: Cavitation

There is no sediment or dirt or anything at the bottom of your tank. If you don't believe me, go pull your fuel sending unit and pump assembly and take a look.

Even if there was sediment or dirt, people are forgetting about the lil device we call FUEL Filters

mileage

I have a 91 SE automatic, and 4 years ago, I drove to Maine (from PA). We stopped for gas at around 350 miles because that's when I figured we'd need to, but my Maxima took less gas than the two other cars in our caravan (a grand am and a jetta... both 4 cylinder). I figured it out, and it was around 30 mpg. I had just had my engine flushed, had new tires (properly inflated), and had polished the car perfectly before the trip, but was still floored that I did better on fuel mileage than the 4 cylinders did!!!

I do attribute a lot of that to the engine flush. I also own a 98 GLE, and had the engine flushed about 10 days ago (trans too). My wife and I just returned to PA from MI, and got 32 MPG from Battle Creek, MI to Youngstown, OH. It was 289 miles and 8.997 gallons of gas (premium).

Also, I believe that keeping your car waxed will help??? Maybe it reduces wind resistance??? Makes bugs easier to get off anyway.

Explain clogged Fuel injector sceens if that's the case. Fuel filters work, but you can never get it all. You have too much faith in the purity of the gas our beloved petroleum refineries produce.

And...

Explain why fuel filters get clogged and cause running probs. No dirt in there? Maybe not all cars, but if there isn't, then why have a filter to begin with? We should all take them off and remove the injector screens to allow less restricted fuel flow to the injectors right?

OK

OK you guys got me..I'm dumb. As someone just pointed out to me, the fuel pickup is at the BOTTOM of the tank anyway. No more arguments.

How and where do you drive. I get about 300 around town..which is 80% of my driving. I get 350-360 highway, but that's doing 80mph. I guess I could get 400-425 if I drove the speed limit. If you are getting 215 on th ehighway, look into tuneup stuff first, filters, plugs wires, timing, etc. Then check 02 sensor (trips an enigne light I believe, it did on my subaru). If that isn't it, have a shop run an engine diagnostic..they can tell alot from hooking it up to an oscilloscope.

I get 300-325 per tank cruising on the highway at 115.

O2 sensor will sometimes throw a code, sometimes not. I drove my VG for over 300 miles with NO O2 sensor. i.e. It was removed from my Y pipe and disconnected from my wiring harness. Anyway, it never threw a code and I STILL got over 300 miles on that tank.
