I know that with the stock Bose system, the antenna only goes up when you play the radio, right? And the antenna goes back down when you play cds. When I had my aftermarket head unit installed, I don't know what they did, but now my antenna goes up everytime I turn on the stereo. It didn't matter whether I play the radio or cds, the antenna would stay up. I hardly play the radio anymore, I usually listen to my cds. Maybe I should just shave the darn thing off?

You're correct about the attenna movements

I've also got the Bose stereo, and it only extends when the AM/FM is on. When my CD's or cassettes are playing, it is retracted. As for your aftermarket setup, I'm sure that your feed to the extend the antenna is whenever your stereo is on, hence why it goes up whenever you use it. I don't have a clue as how to remedy your electrical situation. Well, instead of shaving your antenna, you could disconnect the power harness to the attenna (the harness is located right next to the antenna in the trunk). You won't have a functioning attenna, but then again, you won't have an ugly hole in your trunk. Good luck.

I believe a couple of people here have added an antenna switch. Basically it's an external switch that can cut power to the antenna manually. I think it would be a pretty easy job, just find a switch, put it inline with the power to the antenae and you're done.

I too have this problem, however, I have come up with a solution. Have you seen the VW's antenna or maybe the Mercury Cougar's antenna. Stylish, short, sweet, simple. Do you get my drift?

I think it depends on the head unit you have. . . The higher end units will typically have an antenna control that will raise and lower the antenna if a CD is inserted. I don't see why this isn't something that happens on every unit as it can't be that difficult to put in, but it is an annoyance to anyone that has experienced it. My old Alpine unit did it and I made sure the Eclipse unit didn't when I bought it.

I guess I'm not the only one who have this problem. My head unit is a Pioneer unit. I would like to possibly shave the antenna off, and get one of them Ooglike like antenna, but a functional one. However, with shaving the antenna off, repainting, and filling the hole, it's not going to be cheap. I have to get a new antenna anyway because my antenna is somewhat bent. Maybe I have to go back to the audio place where I bought this head unit, and see if they know how to get the antenna to stay down when only playing cds. As far as the VW's style antenna, is it possible to change to that sort of antenna for the Maxima? I like how it looks, and it's functional as well.

It is your head unit...The Pioneers do that. I have one too.
You can get a sterio shop to fix this problem for you. The only loss is a little money

Remember that Maximas come with 2 antennas

I just remembered that Maximas come with 2 antennas--the one that we're used to seeing going up and down, and the other which is etched onto your rear windshield (the etching is mixed around your defroster wires, look at your back glass carefully, and you'll see that there are 2 distinct patterns, one for the defroster, and the other for your 2nd, non-mobile antenna)--something Nissan calls dual-diversity antenna system. Some of the newer non-Nissan cars also have this feature (if you look at some of the newest upper model Acuras, they don't have a visible external antenna period, just the etched antenna on their back windshields). The stock radios determine which signal is the stronger one from your 2 antennas, and utilizes the one w/ the stronger signal. You may be okay by just disabling the stock antennae from extending, and hope that the 2nd antenna etched onto your back window will suffice for decent radio reception.

Dual function roof mount

I have a Hamma antenna that I imported from Germany. It is a dual function antenna that has the radio & cel phone antenna built as one. It looks like a VW one.

Tell you the truth, the radio reception of mine, or the VW ones for that matter, is not very good. Those roof mount rubber antennas just don't work great. But they sure look cool!!

I had my oem antenna hole shaved. It cost me about 300 bucks. The hole in the roof I drilled myself. You have to remove the rear clips to the head liner to do so. It is not difficult, but no fun either.

If you want the address of the web site that I got the german antenna, I can give you that, but the site is in German. (You've been warned.)

later, Ming

I had a cut off switch added when I had my radio custom installed... you can't just put a switch on the ant wire because if you add amps to your system then they won't work with the ant down (I was told). I'm not sure exactly how the guy got around this problem, but here is where I have my override switch:
