Updating a 2001 AE
Updating a 2001 AE
I appreciate your assistance and ideas. I have a grey lustre AE with charcoal leather interior. I am interested in adding a dash kit for my car. I think the brushed aluminum would look better than the woodgrain in the AE. (Has anyone tried woodgrain in the AE?) I want the dash kit and the door kit (around window controls) and perhaps other trim. Where can I find the best dash kit for my car?
Also, what about clear markers? They seem to be a necessity.
Where can I buy these? Thanks for helping with this update.

Good taste there. I have not done my dash yet, but as the owner of a Gray/Charcoal AE as well, I would go with the brushed aluminum. Particularly given the shifter **** and white guages. Woodgrain would step the car away from its very simple and classy sports look and make it feel like a cheap, wanna-be luxury car in my opinion.

or search under his name, you might have to go back about a month but he did his interior and it looked really nice.

Go to www.custommaxima.com for the best deal on getting all 4 clear bumper lenses.
And if you want to keep them legal, get LEDs...there's a thread listing the sizes and where to get them somewhere on the .ORG.

The SAE does not certify bulbs colors, so when the clear markers are turned OFF, they will be illegally clear since the markers, by law, have to both illuminate and REFLECT amber or red. While they are turned off they will not reflect or illuminate any color and are therefore illegal.

Oh really? I didn't know that. Is your info. accurate nationwide, or does it vary by state?

Having said that, most states have either directly adopted FMVSS in writing, or they have created verbiage which mimics it to apply to individuals. What state are you from?
In the state of California, the law reads that the corner lights or side markers must light up as amber in front, red in rear at night. It does not mention daytime reflection, so as long as you have red and amber bulbs I wouldn't worry about it here in the Golden State. That is, unless you aren't living in CA. Then I dunno. Do whatever you want

Well, it is a state-by-state policy but most have adopted that policy. The thing is that the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Title 108 defines the law about corner markers and clearly states that side/corner markers must both illuminate and reflect red or amber whether powered on or off. However the FMVSS doesn't apply to individuals...just manufacturers and business, meaning that Nissan can't install clear corners on your car from scratch and that mechanics and auto shops can't install them as they are specifically restricted from doing any work which reverses something which was installed to meet the FMVSS.

Wow, sounds like someone's done their homework. I'm in WA, so that's what I'm most concerned about. So if you have (ugly) colored bulbs then that's ok?

The thing is that manufacturers are required to certify motor vehicle lighting equipment using bulbs which meet SAE specifications. Since there is currently no SAE specification for a red or amber bulb, a red or amber bulb could not be used to show conformance with SAE standards. Therefore, no lighting equipment with an all clear lens could possibly comply with the red or amber color requirements specified in S5.1.5 of the standard. So, in any state which adopts Title 108, clear lenses on corners, markers, tails, etc. are illegal.
Having said that, I have clear markers.
I think the cops are mostly focused on "click-it or ticket" these days out here, but if you were to get pulled over for something else (i.e. speeding, seat belt, etc.) I would expect them to tack on clear markers to the ticket the cop's having a bad day.
