Has anyone heated up there springs to lower the car. I have done many a search...and really want to lower the car...but even more so dont want to loose any ride comfort. Outside of an havent found much info on.

 

its about as bad as those old cutlass supremes with little lowrider wheels you see bouncing around town. Dont do it

on stock springs it is not a good idea to cut them AT ALL... they wil be bouncing and bad... it thorws the rate off... now on aftermarket springs a coil orso to even the drop is cool... most use a progrseeive spring rate and the top and bottom coils are dead coils anyway... but not on stock springs!

just my opinion anyway.

 

Don't mess with something you don't understand thoroughly!!! You may end up fatiguing points within the spring to the point where it's unsafe.

I remember hearing a structural engineer make a similar point about reinforcing an overhead alumimum sign support structure. As we were talking about the idea of reinforcing the corners of the structure to be able to bear additional loading, the engineer said there may be critical metal fatiguing from the welding process to the point where the structure becomes unsound/unsafe.

i was about to heat up my springs but the shop said that it is HARD to get each corner of the car to the saem drop......for example if they heat one spring more than the other springs it will become more flimsy and it will compress more.....basically it is hard to get an even drop no mater how u heat them......

 

i have seen several springs break into pieces after they have been driven on after heating them. if you have ever seen a heated spring compared to a stock or lowering spring i dont know how they ALL dont snap.

 

Get a nice coil-over system which lowers the car a bit, cutting/heating springs is a ghetto-rig that could be potentially dangerous. If you don't have the money for even a spring set, save up and buy it. If you're gonna do it, DO IT RIGHT.

JMHO..

 

Don't cut springs. Don't heat springs. Buy new springs with heavy-duty struts. Save your money for *months* if you have to. And don't forget to have an alignment done to complete the project...
