Brakes squeek 1/4 way

Whenever I step on the brakes on my 98 I30t less than 1/4 of the way, they squeek. When they are depressed more than 1/4 of the way, the sound goes away. Is this normal or is somthing wrong? If I do change my brake pads, can I just get pads for a 98 max or are they not interchangable? Where can I find a good write-up on how to change the brake pads? Thanx for your time!

This happens on A LOT of cars. It's pretty normal. Basically the squeel till more friction takes place (depress more) and the sound naturally goes away. Alot of the members here on the ORG, like myself, experience a more irritating problem w/ the brake pads... they squeel non-stop and not to mention at a high frequency too till the point w/ the windows down, ears start to hurt. it sucks... but u should be alright. If u want to eliminate this you can go w/ softer brakepads... perhaps organic ones too.
