Just sitting here, watching more Street Outlaws and loving the racing - but with snows done and spring coming fast around here, it's time to get back to work on the car. I've had time to think over several issues, and find some answers.

In no particular order:

Cylinder block guards, to prevent cylinder wiggle. Have a set of Supertech Blockguard inserts just waiting..

Decided not to install larger valves or port the heads - just clean up flashing in the ports. With monster cams, porting seems unnecessary.

Cam timings are kinda decided - still must wait until final assembly to be sure.

MS3-Pro Ecu: I have the new essential sensors for MAP, air and water temp, and a newly designated and superior Hall sensor for the trigger wheel. (and it's red)...

Still need to order a custom oil pump, which I'll need before final assembly, but $900..... this one addresses the major failures of the VQ35 oil pump - hopefully this means it won't break.

I needed to consider the changes in displacement and upper rev limit of the BC stroker, and there are several. The displacement goes from 3.5L to 3.8L and rev limit will go to 8000.

MAF flow at 3.5L/6800RPM is a calculated 416 cfm, and at 3.8L/8000RPM goes to 532cfm. I'm looking at a larger TB and MAF, and a custom intake manifold made from a 2012 LIM and sheet aluminum. I have the 90mm Q45 TB and MAF(3-wire) and some 3.5" tubing and a 90* elbow, and still debating a final design. Gonna need to suck some air !!

Original compression ratio was 11:1 w/CPs, but with the longer stroke it goes to a calculated 11.9:1. Good thing I'm on E85 - or E98 if needed.

Since air flow is increased by 12.8%, fuel injectors will go from 440 to 550 cc Bosch EV-14s. The present WALBRO 450 fuel pump is plenty big enough..

I need to buy a plasma cutter to do some work on making parts for the IM, on the exhaust header collector, to move the 3" dump from the left side to the right side, (the 6AN fuel lines side) so I can replace all the lines in the fuel system with 8AN lines. (and because I always wanted one).

Things to do! (and probably forgot more than the list shows). And of course the nitrous system needs re-engineered (or maybe turbo)??

4.0L Intake

It occured to me that there is one Nissan V6 intake system that might serve for a larger intake - the 2013 Frontier 4.0 that I drive has interesting parts. Although it is a RWD vehicle, still maybe.....

and a couple of views of a LIM and UIM for the same engine:

If - the LIM will mount on my new engine, I think I can shape the UIM manifold to work. The LIM is close in dimensions to the 2012 Maxima LIM I used last, but I think I'll need to buy a Frontier LIM to be sure.

A side note - I'm starting to receive the aluminum bar stock and sheets of 1/4" plate I ordered. I can make a UIM if needed, but adapting an OEM part would be easier, I think.

stuff..

I have ordered a Frontier 4.0L LIM, so it's on it's way. I'm 99% sure that the width between intake ports is greater than the VQ35DE spacing - because the 4.0L deck is taller and so the distance between heads will be more. Still, parts-in-hand. If using the UIM looks possible, even with mods required, maybe. I just got a FedEx truck load of 1/4" aluminum sheets, (OK, maybe a few) so that's now Plan B.

I also just ordered a rare fresh-and-new Cosworth oil pump with all the racing mods for the VQ35DE - rated for 8,500 RPM, higher oil pressure, much stronger gears, and so maybe blow-up proof.
And, only $579 from BoomBop...

stuff coming in the mail !!

I have received a nice sealed new Cosworth oil pump, the 4.0 LIM from a Frontier, two chunks of 1" x 3" x 26" aluminum, two sheets of 1/4" x 12" x 36" AL, and one sheet of 1/4" x 12" x 16" AL. Also some 10AN-3/8"NPT fittings and end caps for the 10AN connections into the oil pan. Also bought a new Walbro high-pressure E85 tank pump - seemed like a good idea.

The Cosworth pump is the real deal -came sealed into the shipping box by Cosworth and has orange paint on all removable parts. Gears appear to be machined steel.

Intake LIM from 4.0L, and one from a G370HR, proved to be shorter and wider than the 2012 Maxima manifolds I have here, although the ports from the UIM vary a lot on the first two, still nothing will adapt to the port spacing I have on the Maxima LIM. Summary - no 4.0L UIM will work as-is. Oh, well. I had to try.

newest fuel pump specs

I received this pump a couple of days ago. I checked and verified it's real and not a counterfeit pump. Highest sustained pressure and volume of any in-tank Walbro pump.

New DRs from Jegs

Because it's Mother's Day, and Jegs had a good sale going, I just bought two M/T ET Street S/S Radial tires, 275/50R15, for the Shark. The last pair were used up (rode hard and put away wet too many times), and Jegs had these for $181.50 each, including shipping to my door.

Regular price is $ 206.25 - a saving of $49.50 for the pair.

alternate exhaust manifolds - maybe for turbo ??

Found these later-model VQ35HR RWD exhaust manifolds on eBay, for cheap, so I bought a pair for a look. Interesting. I measured the exhaust ports on a manifold from a 99 VQ30 car - I kept both when I first installed headers. Maybe good for a turbo project.. ??

Dimensions are identical to within 1-2 mm in both directions. That fits with I've seen from all the different VQ35 heads I've had, including the HR heads mounted on the stroker block at the moment. They all mount the same using different pairs of the four holes found around each exhaust port, from 1995 to at least the 2013, the latest Maxima I have in the stable.

Actually, the exhaust port opening in the manifold is pretty tricky - there is a taper for the head contact side into the manifold pipes. The photo shows this pretty well if you look at it in the sun. The old 3.0 manifolds are pretty basic compared to the VQ35HRs.

Looking down the throat of the HR outlet shows the 3-way merge into a 2" outlet pipe. Pretty nice work.

Engines, engine parts, transmissions, suspension, body parts are all found in many different models and many are interchangeable. FWD and RWD models have the most differences, I think. "VQ" is part of the engine designation. VQ35DE and VQ35HR and VQ37HR are examples.

The HR (High Revolution) engine showed up somewhere around 2007 in the 350Z RevUp model and spread thru most RWD models. The HR block is different than the VQ in many ways, but many parts fit on the VQ35 block, like the cylinder heads from the Infiniti FX-35 or VQ35HR or several others.

The HR head has superior breathing to the ported DE head, but the exhaust ports have the same openings and configuration and will bolt up to my custom 4th gen headers, as well as the VQ30 and VQ35 heads. Allee same-same ports.

For example, the 2005 VQ35DE block I'm using has a RevUp oil pump, the balanced BC stroker crank, rods and pistons for 3.8L, the HR heads and JWT cams, (intake still undecided) Megasquirt MS3-Pro ECU, E85 complete fuel system, a clearanced oil pan, ARP head and mains studs, and a lot of misc parts... the transmission is from a 2006 2.5L Altima with 2001 Maxima bellhousing, locked differential, and fully race-built by IPT in New Jersey, and my custom MSD-controlled shifter. That thing is a beast.

No simple answers, I think.

Nissan has an amazing number of interchangeable parts that most people don't know about - except for the real gurus on this forum (not me - I'm still looking). The same 4 spd automatic transmission (4AT) is found in Nissan Maximas from 1995 thru 2004 and in the Altima thru 2006. The VQ35DE came out in 2002 and it's still being made for Nissans and Infiniti and probably other stuff. Most parts and cars/trucks are made in Tennessee now - my 2012 Frontier is all 'Murican.

Explore your options here if modding your car -

indeed, i'm exploring options. but, my neck hurts and i have more questions after re-reading in this thread, even 5 pages in this thread feels like 20 threads on any other forums, long post with lots of pics and my scroll wheel on my mouse is spinning like a fly wheel and i can't stop reading.

I'm not sure if i can write all the words and questions in my head atm. The VQ35 only has few more mm on the bore and a few more mm on the deck height which saves a ton of time and money on the other hand with vq35 crank coming in at 0.6mm over deck one could either deck/cut the pistons or order custom pistons with different wrist pin location.

WEATHER OR NOT a VQ35 stroker crank has the same deck height as the stock VQ35 crank is a different story and would still mean custom pistons. Whatever hot rods are expensive anyways but, this rabbit hole can keep going.

For me the next rabbit hole is weather VQ35 let alone 2005 block is truley a direct swap in a 2001 5th gen 3.0L maxima, do all the sensors go in the same spot with the same bolt patterns will the fancey 3.0 dual plane intake manifold fit? (it's gotta look stock as possible).

Then the next level down in that rabbit hole is the problem when you talk to ECU tuners and tell them you have a 2000 or 2001 Nissan maxima, never mind how many liters because their response is....

Name: 2fbvyId.jpg
Views: 44
Size: 10.3 KB

Because when the words "Maxima" and "ECU tuning" come together, there is no such thing as a 2000 to 2001 maxima but, just like your amazing thread here one problem at a time. (the factory programed it, one way or another it can be done)

Ok, great how much is used VQ35 gonna cost me? $300 or $800? And damn those HR heads must be a far cry from stock VQ30 and VQ35 heads, i wonder if i could make my stock intake fit or if it would fit or if the intake ports are bigger or smaller let alone the same shape, on that note, great the vq35 and vq30 used the same sized and shaped exhaust ports, i get the HR heads is the same shape but, it is it the same size and are they angled the same? And why in sam hill are the 3.5 and 3.0 OBX header kits different kits? would i have to throw away my OBX headers for my 3.0?

Boy o boy if i could keep my OBX headers and my stock intake and go with HR heads and one of them rev up oil pumps whatever it does (more volume and or pressure) and and street cams on top of some extra stroke she should be nice a mild sleeper.

I wonder why everyone keeps the vq30 timing parts? no guides needed cause the deck height is taller and or lighter weight?

side question, that's stock VQ girdle you changed out for the billet piece if i understand right?

Have you looked in a dry sump, is such a system or even this question applicable to a VQ? My buddy has a dry sump vacuum system on his 356 cub mopar V8, it'll suck the dang valve cover plugs back in the hole. which means negative crank case pressure and thusly windage is nil and helps wing the RPMs and helps things psin a little freer, idk if that hurts or helps oiling may depend on the engine from the conversations i'm seeing, he runs a super bad *** oil from Brad Pen that's not only bad *** but, does the same job in oil starved situations/environments/engines. This same buddy swapped is front wheel drive 80s dayton to a 383 v8 rear wheel drive, like you were talking about earlier. I wished north KC was closer to Topeka, i'd like buy you a beer and shoot the **** with you. Thanks for fixing the old photos, probably why when i re read this time, there was way more stuff.

BTW: wouldn't it be neat if unorthodox made a pulley between the stock size aluminum pulley they sell and the underdrive pulley they sell? some folks complains the steering gets a little harder, sure would be nice for those us that DD are maximas. OH and i'm trying to find my a self a 125 amp Alt but, not a cheap no name ebay one that's gonna leave stranded in the TX or CA desert to die. also hope to take digital readout LCD like for hobby projects at radio shack, for amps or volts so i can tell when if the alt is crapping out.

Now if i could just shut the hell up and maybe figure out how to get these questions in places here where the gurus could see them i'd be headed in the right direction.

You're invited to Topeka for a day, where you can investigate the contents of my garage and mini-warehouse, and the Shark who is sitting on its trailer. Think how much fun you will have, up to your kneecaps in Nissan parts, and you can use my baby Nikon digital to take all the pix you want and take home the SDHC chip when you leave (I seem to have a couple extra).

I'm retired now so I have lots of days to play now... heck, we can have a Land Shark lager to celebrate your new knowledge..

PM me if you decide something, it's about one hour driving time.

Hey, bud, thanks for asking... I've been kinda "under the weather" since July. Prostrate Grade 8 cancer since 2013, with 39 days of massive radiation treatments (lifetime dosage), chemo, internal infections, internal bleeding with surgeries, pretty much constant lower-GI pain, and still retaining a positive attitude - "if I wake up in the morning, it's gonna be a good day", and the cancer is gone. However , my energy level is up and down a lot, so the engine project is stalled and sitting where I left it.

But, I'm getting better and look forward to finishing the engine come spring. I have nearly convinced myself to switch from nitrous to turbo - if that works for the OKC Street Outlaws then it can work for me!

For those who are wondering, Harold (Grey99Max) is still doing well. The Landshark has exchanged owners and you will see a thread some time at the beginning of 2021.

The amount of wiring in this car has made me pass out a few times..... But I'm actually doing a good job documenting things on my phone for an eventual thread.

I'm trying to take the car back to stock and start all over again because I have discovered me and Harold modify vehicles with the same principle in mind (The I can always take this out and work on it later principle - eg. I was able to remove all of the nitrous wiring very easily... I have no idea how it works but it did come out in one piece), but still a lot of this stuff is before my time and I am unfamiliar with a lot of tech you pioneers used back in the day simply because I didn't have a driver's license .

The tuning of the motor has FINALLY been solved... This has been the biggest thing bothering me about this car since I first read about it in my .org early days and seeing the "tune-by-tape" in person.... It's simple, safe, effective.... But how ya gonna enjoy the sweet sweet high rpm noises a VQ makes?!?!?! Hopefully this car can safely see 8krpm now.

I do have to figure out the final iteration of the "Shift_Fast" mod you guys came up with... I was going to hope that JWT could just reflash the TCM to shift at 8k but that is NOT possible through JWT. I did find an Australian based company who made a plug and play box for the RE4 that turns it into a full manual trans.... But honestly what's the point of an Auto if I have to shift it? The only real custom TCM option I'm finding is between two Aussie companies that cost between 1400 and 2k..... Sooooo after some .org grave-digging this Shift_Fast mod y'all guys came up with pretty much takes care of all that nonsense..... But you had to manually shift the car.... But based on phone conversations this car has a version that has the ability to shift on it's own at the user set RPM with the Shift_Fast Mod.... Whichh is pretty much a dream come true..... Soooo motor has the ability to be tuned? with a transmission that can handle anything I will be throwing at it? Ohhhh yeahhhh

Repairs are about half-finished today. I've got all the parts now, and need to get the winch mounted and welded into place. Probably this will be finished this weekend.
What kind of engine upgrades did you do and what car models did they come from? I.e. Fuel injector upgrade from an infinity xq30 and etc? I just got this maxima. I want to do N/A without nos. It's a daily. I bought it from my brother.

before i go into my usual spew.....

What transmission do you have?

(Pay attention for 2004 maxima owners, 2005-06 has 5AT or 6MT options only and 2007 and newer Maximas all have CVTs)

-Auto-
5-Speed
4-Speed

Manual
6-speed.

If you're manual then well you have 3 pedals.

If you have 2 pedals and a /+- sign on your shifter than you're 5speed Auto / RE5F22A / 5AT

If you have 2 pedals and NO +/- the you have a 4-speed Auto / 4AT
