BAD fuel filter and PCV valve

if i havent changed either in the last 50k miles, could they be affecting the way my motor runs/idles?? my car just seems a lil sluggish lately.

and YES, i cleaned the throttle body, air filter, did the plugs at 60k and just did my tranny/motor oils too.

thanks,

Ant

Are you saying you haven't replaced your fuel filter in 50k? Your car still runs?

Ant, change the fuel filter. I did and it made a huge difference...in my case anyway. I never change out the fuel filter since I got the car. So that could explain it. I changed mine out at around 55k.

Ant, I did the plugs, tranny fluid and switched to synthetic oil in the engine, car was still a little ruogh and sluggish at low rpms. I changed my fuel filter cuz it had never been changed before (I have 60k miles). It feels that the sluggishness is mostly gone.
Might need a PCV valve too. Do the fuel filter first and see how it feels.

This heat lately doesn't help either. When I leave for work in the morning and it's not real hot out yet, my engine is 5x smoother and it pulls real nice. Once its hot out, the sluggishness comes back.

get off the machine go to the dealer or the parts store and get yourself a fuel filter and a PCV valve!!you will need about $20-$35.00. Repost after you change your stuff you should notice the difference!

after I changed my fuel filter, ( i got the big 300z one)
I noticed my 1-2 shift became smoother. Now I can't tell when it shifts from 1 to 2, because it seems very seamless now.

The feul filter is probably the most neglected maintenacne item on a car. They're supposed to be changed every 15K miles on the Maxima. Change it and do a hi speed run afterwards. You'll see.

Funny you should say that, the fuel filter on the 5th gen Max is not a maintenance item.

Man, for the life of me, I couldn't get the fuel filter off. I managed to pull the top hose off, but the bottom just won't give. I'm thinking about giving up and taking it into a shop. If only there wasn't fuel involved (heating up the hose would do the trick).

Getting the fuel filter: Make sure that the clamps on the bottom clear the nipple completely. Then move the clamps all the way down the hose, otherwise when your yanking the damn clamp could go flying off.

Also, do change out the PCV valve. A note to the wise. Use a 10mm and remove the hex. That'll make moving the hose 10x easier.

if you're really bored, replace the fuel lines while you're in there. I find it easier to replace the fuel lines (cut 'em off) rather than twisting and tugging trying to get the fuel filter off. If you don't want to go that route, make a small slice on the fuel lines and it'll be a little easier to remove. If that doesn't help, get some WD 40 and lubricate it. If that doesn't do it (LOL), heat up the fuel line and to make it expand. If that doesn't do it, you're SOL.

I changed my factory spark-plugs to plat-plugs, the fuel filter, and the PCV valve and I notice a big difference right away.

I would do all three it can't hurt....

i just did my plugs at the 60k mark along with Fuel filter,PCV, tranny fluid. Now i have around 101k and the car just feels a bit sluggish.

Ill probably have Jeff(maximus75) do the fuel filter, PCV, coolant and belts this weekend.

Just in case you were too....

Supposedly the filter, tho bigger in diameter will fit using the same clip....

Off to napa or parts plus tomorrow

Heck, I've got 96K on mine with the original fuel filter (and PCV valve) and the thing runs like the day I bought it. However, I plan on doing plugs/PCV/fuel filter (all for the first time) at 100K.

I've done the 300ZX filter twice. the clamp will hold it. It's probably the maximum size the clamp will hold. I thought of re-inforcing it with zip ties etcs, but the clamp never failed.

Is there any real benefit to the larger fuel filter? Is there a big price difference between that and a stock filter?

Thanks

From what I understand the larger fuel filter will last twice as long. Meaning twice as long between maintenance intervals. And if you've changed yours before, then you know what a pain it is. So maybe for the $5-10 difference (just guessing on that) it's worth it.

Thanks. I haven't changed mine yet (44,000 miles) but I was thinking about it. I get crappy gas mileage (but I also have a heavy foot) I'm just wondering if it may need a change. I can't say if it has ever been done, I bought the car last year.

Just changed both on my 95

Put a 300ZX filter in and new PCV in. What a dif. Throttle response is much better. I last had them changed at the 60k mark (actually 58k)
...needless to say i like it The bottom line on the filter was a beotch...and getting the hose off the pcv was fun either but well worth it.
