How come my 5th gen sucks at drifting in the snow?

When I pull the e-brake my abs LIGHT comes on. There is obviously an issue somewhere. The abs light should not come on just because I'm pulling on the e brake. You guys went by default that I don't know what I'm talking about, that's another thing that haunts this forum no courteousness everyone assumes the worst.

More like a shortened handbrake turn.
Mine would do that without the handbrake being applied...until I finally got snows on the BACK too.
Much better now.
Hard to resist when you live in IA and the roads are snowy for a good part of the year.

holy shhh what a crazy thread! well u cannot "drift a FWD car but u can slide around using the Ebrake like some said. i do it all the time in the snow but its FARRRRRR from "drifting". and umm u shouldnt be getting an ABS light from that?

have your car looked at..as pulling the ebrake shouldnt be triggering your abs light.
drifting in the snow in a max.. fwd pulling ebrake.. doesnt exist. thats sliding. even in canada its called sliding. not drifting.

No it does not. My new patented "E-brake booster" does however. It senses when the driver is ready to release the e-brake to exit the slide. By putting special weights inside the handle, the handle will drop much faster than the stock setup does. The e-brake booster can help you exit a slide a whopping .36 seconds faster than stock. Well worth the $250.00!
Watching those videos reminds me of the fun I used to have in my '88 Supercharged MR2 in the snow. Now THAT car could drift in the snow!

Did I say TCS? Nope. I said ABS.
TCS algorithms are different, although related. In either case, your car will behave the way some software guy in Japan thinks it ought to. Do stuff he did not think of, and all bets are off - driving around corners while heaving on your parking brake is likely on that list.

On a more scientific note; Anybody ever noticed that 01-03 Max share the same tranny case part numbers with 04 - 05 Max? And that the 04-05 lsd can be purchased for les than 500$ at Conicelli?
I am wondering if the non lsd crown gear can be fitted on a 04 LSD. I guess if It does not, will have to swap in a final drive shaft as well*... But I am sure the crown gear can be modified accordignely...
I have a spare transmission sitting there, I might open it and take some measurement. Anybody have an LSD they can measure?

Dunno. I'd like to think that the purely mechanical P-brake is completely separate from the electronics, but I'm not so sure after scanning through the BR section of the FSM.
The FSM specifically mentions that ABS activation is possible if you rev the engine above 5000 rpm with the vehicle stopped (pg BR-76). It does not indicate whether there is any foot pressure on the brake pedal for this to happen.
OP mentions "several minutes", and that may be important. I wonder if the ABS is somehow getting the impression that there are significantly different diameter tires on the rear than it is programmed to assume are there.

Anyways, I believe the reason the abs light is coming on is because when you yank the e-brake and the rear tires stop, while the front tires are still turning, the system senses the imbalance of wheel speeds and gets confused. ABS is supposed to keep all wheels turning at the same speed. When the light comes on the abs is disabled. I believe this is normal. It's not happened on my 5.5, but some of my older cars did this every time.
As far as your 5.5's DRIFTING/SLIDING(?) abilities are concerned, compared to your 3rd or 4th gen, it is all in the tires. If you had the exact same tires on your new Max as your old one, the handling would be identical, at least on ice/packed snow.
If you really want to slide, put some slicks on the rears. JK, funny to read this thread as I was just out sliding her around a couple hours ago.
go to your nearest fast food restaurant and steal a stack of plastic trays. get them under the rear tires and lock up ur e-brake. play in the snow.
