4th gen factory wheel faq
4th gen factory wheel faq
Good morning everyone! This is my first post, my name is Paul and I'm from Long Island, New York. I just purchased my first Nissan and my first maxima. It's a black 1996 gxe automatic. The car has the very 90's looking alloy wheels and they are pretty awful. I found a set from what I believe would belong on an se or gle. Does anyone know what wheels would be offered in 1996 for the respective trim levels?
I assume:
GXE - steelies and hubcaps, or the ugly solid wheels with the d shapes.
SE/GLE - the sportier looking alloys with the twisted spokes.
I'm just curious about which wheels belong on what trim level. If anyone has photos that would be really awesome.
Sorry to make a stupid first post, I tried searching around but didn't come up with much.
Thanks,
Paul

95-96 got shafted on wheels. Look for the newer 97-99.
96 SE has the "sawblade" style and the GLE has a "honeycomb" style but only along the outside of the rim. The center of the face is all solid.
For the newer models (4.5gen) the GLE wheels would have been like a "sawblade" where as SE's came with a "fat five". Basically a thick 5 spoke with a center rib.
However, you could also go with a newer model 17" (or even the 18's or 19's) from the G35 or 350z. They tend to be better looking, better quality, lighter wheels. Don't waste money on an oem wheel from the same model. Imo... Ebay Maxima wheel and a year, then look for used. That will give you a good idea on the styles.

When I had the honey combs, I wanted to get rid of them so badly. It doesn't do justice for me and doesn't belong on the car.. I perfer either aftermarket/sawblade/G35.. 10000x better. The good looking rims on this car changes the look alot.. also the height too.
Okay thanks a lot everyone! Just didn't know the names of any of these wheels. It was a lot easier to find the names of OEM VW wheels lol. I found a set of "saw blades" with tires for $60. I'm gonna get them. So would they originally belong on a gle or se? And my gxe could have steelies with hubcaps or the honeycombs?
Thanks,
Paul

Mine was the same as Junebug1701 only the "honeycomb" wheels werent in as good shape. They are driveable just ugly and corroded, though I still have them incase. I regret staying with 15" Mesh X, I should have went with 16" or 17" So go with a little bigger.
Don't forget these options...
