why is turbo knocked for auto's

why isn't turbo on an automatic encouraged .. instead people knock it

hlh0501 Nov 19, 2002 09:55 AM

As long as their tranny is built to hold it, go for it...

if any auto comes to KY, I would gladly have the kit fitted to their car, and would love to see what an auto max could do !

Its not knocked its just that nobody has made a kit for the autos yet. So no one knows how much boost you can handle, how the tranny will hold up...........

:)

delio Nov 19, 2002 10:12 AM

Also don't lose sight of the fact that the Auto tranny is physically bigger than the manual, thus space for piping and such becomes a major issue. It can be done of course. Just more of a PITA than it is for a 5 speed.

I know I said this before, but again if I had the money I would drive up to your place and get the turbo install on my auto.

RastaManMax Nov 19, 2002 01:13 PM

Makes you wonder if the Maximum Tuning "race" VB mod would hold up to the turbo...

SuDZ Nov 19, 2002 04:46 PM

The one turbo on a 5th gen auto got too expensive. I mean he had to throw a couple G's towards Level 10 so that things would not blow up on him. Maybe this is what is keeping the auto guys back?

SuDZ

Conrad283 Nov 19, 2002 07:04 PM

i guess the VB mod just isn't enough .... you need a level 10 tranny cough $3200 cough ... and then the price of turbo .... there has to be another way

You know I don't live that far away.... how much down time is needed for a 5spd? :)

if the manual tranny is stronger than the auto tranny ... what parts are so different that make the auto inferior in strength to the manual ..

nice choices

I don't understand this cause there are s/c auto's pushn around 270 hp and there tranny's are holdn up fine with just the vb and tranny cooler so i don't see why a turbo auto won't with low to moderate boost. I dunno i guess we will find out. I am planning on doing my auto in the spring when i get my tax check. I might have pfi do it or i may have hlh0501 do it. I am also gonna talk to another shop that has opened in colorado and see if they can do it for any cheaper. But expect my car to be turbo charged by the spring and we'll see if my tranny will hold up to the boost.

True, turboed engines deal with lower psi than SC'd engines, so it doesn't make sense that the tranny would have problems with a turbo if it works fine with an SC.

I have 43000 on the tranny right now, i bought the car with 36000 in Jan, so i don't drive a whole lot. Hopefully my tranny will be fine after the turbo

auto prices would be similar to 5spd ones, can be found at http://www.hlh0501.com/turbo.htm

as far as down time.. on an auto, I would need the car for probably around one week - maybe a little more , little less.. 5spd car=2-5days we do hope.

i wish i could, i really do, but i just don't have the funds right now

SuDZ Nov 21, 2002 01:15 PM

Once mine is paid off it might be really hard not going for the turbo if I can swing the money.

Anyway that there could be a discount on the first Auto Max to get the kit, or if they was a bunch of guys that came at once, any place to stay while in Kentucky.

i guess im one of the only if not the only one that has ever turboed an auto Max. Coming from experince, i wouldnt recommend it. even with a valvebody upgrade i blew my tranny. YOu guys should see the pics of those lil magnet things that have in the pan.

i dunno if this affects wear on the tranny more, usually turbos put out more torque then a supercharger, also turbos run hotter then superchargers.
The plantenary gears in the auto trans is actaully really strong, i think its the clutchs and bands that always fail.

so the only way to go is a level 10 tranny

im just curious as to how long did it take for your tranny to go, also how many miles where on it before it went. Also at what level of boost where you at when it blew. im just askn cause when i plan on doin this i will keep the boost low around 4-5 psi for daily driving.
