MEVI's, SC's, and Turbo's...oh my

Is it just me or does every maxima with a supercharger end up paired with a MEVI? I understand it's for increased airflow, but almost everyone seems to agree with the statement

00VI > MEVI

Is there something I'm missing? Or do you SC guys just like MEVI's? I ask because I'm going with a 00VI and future turbo, but I've also considered supercharging. I used to think that SC was way more expensive, but now I see kits going cheaper and cheaper...I will have to research

P.S. I know this is a whole different can O worms, but what are some of the benefits and drawbacks to a SC w/MEVI compared to a 00VI with Turbo?

I am supercharged with the 00VI and i wouldnt be able to tell you the difference with the USIM but there is a comparison the shows that the 00VI does have a bit more potential. The car right now on 14lbs of boost pulls like a bat out of hell especially up top when the VI opens up.

I would have went with a 00VI, but I could not source one in time and I needed to move on getting my car back together. I tried to buy several, but each one fell through, so I just purchased an MEVI from Courtesy (might have been there last one).

Mevi is easier to install and with spacers they are pretty much even with the 00vi. Without the spacers the 00vi does make more power then a mevi but is a little more difficult to install.

If you still want an 00VI I know a guy here who's selling a package: UIM, LIM, rear valve cover, fuel rail...

That's pretty much what I thought about the spacers, but after that you're talking like $600+ for a mevi kit, spacers, rpm switch, blah blah blah

If I had the money I'd do mevi/spacers but I'm working on getting the 00vi together.

this is kinda off topic I know but is there a huge difference between using the 4th gen and 5th gen LIM and fuel, power wise? I'm planning on using the 4th gen LIM and just porting it out to match the 00' UIM

kzoosho Sep 6, 2008 10:22 AM

still need a rpm switch for a 00vi also.

Is this factual? It certainly can't match the 00VI's mid-range. That's simply a design limitation.

Aside from being purtier (:hide:), I like that it's a direct fit and specifically made for the 4th gen.

That's what I was thinking too. Where's the dyno graphs to back up said claim??? (and from more than one dyno session/user....)

WOW, how did you manage to squeeze both reservoirs in there without moving the battery to the trunk?

To answer your rhetorical question :D

With my excellent Tetris puzzle solving skills and choice of PC680 battery....;)

It just barely fits, barely....

We got lucky considering Ptatohed neglected to inquire and size up the Vortech ice chest. (I thought he did prior) :hide: Thus, we ordered it blindly thinking it was smaller than it actually is. We had no choice but to make it fit.

And on a real dyno.

Side note, I always forget the mevi exists, I never thought to browse around for some mevi auto drf's to see if the '02VI pwns it.....

Also, as far as I know, no-one has done a before and after dyno of a port-matched tb on an '00vi, that **** is just horridly mismatched and filling the huge holes for the iac as well would surely show some really nice gains.... hummmm......

SC vs SC + MEVI

Obviously its not factual but its sorta assumed by many that a mevi+spacer would bring it up to par with an 00vi. It would be pretty impossible to compare the two on dynos unless someone is loaded and can run both setups on their car. I have the mevi+spacer but my other mods would make it difficult to compare to someone who has an 00vi alone.

Also ya I agree with the OP, (obviously this isnt the case 100% but) in general a maxima is either mevi+sc or 00vi+turbo. They have nothing to do with each other but its just the modder's preference. Both the mevi and sc were designed to be pretty much bolt on. I like that more not because its easier to install but it looks cleaner and oem under the hood. Both the turbo and 00vi require messier 'rigging' of things but are usually worth it for the extra power.

As far as prices, a mevi+spacer is more expensive, I paid about $550 for my setup. A 00vi typically goes for around $400 (both examples not including an rpm switch). Im glad with my choice though, even if it still does produce a few less hp.
For sc vs turbos, I think sc kits overall are cheaper (based on current used prices) unless you have a connection with an exhaust shop to do your exhaust piping on a turbo.

Well the spacers give the most benefit on a USIM in the mid range so Im assuming it would help the mevi's mid range also.

God, I remember the good ol days when my car was auto....and Ian owned it. :)

I need to find the dyno, but with the extended rev limiter, the power continued to climb. I would still be interested to see someone with a similar setup with an 00VI.

Tha's what I'm doing with my 00VI, I've already filled the holes for the IACV and I'm going to bore the TB out a bit as well.

The 5th gen TB is horribly matched with the 00vi?...huh

Shoto925 Sep 9, 2008 11:01 AM

I'm assuming that the TB and the manifold are perfectly aligned, given that they were made for eachother. I thought he was was reffering to the 4th gen lower manifold being misaligned??

I want to retain my existing fuel system for now, so I'm using 4th gen lower and boring it out to match (hopefully).
