Built turbo VQ35 in 4th Gen

I don't take this as negative at all! Thank you for the feedback. I admit to knowing very little about transmissions. Can you direct me to information that some one has demonstrated this? I am interested to read about it more (please don't take it as prove it to me .. I am genuinely interested). According to my friend who knows a lot more than I do about transmissions and he's built and rebuilt a ton of them, that when people grab gears, the edges of the gears chip off, it is not an instant failure. This in itself reduces the meshing surface area which makes the gear weaker. Over time, this will break. This is how it was explained to me. I have seen it work, so I will go with that for now. If it breaks, I have one spare back up that I can build with thicker (perhaps straightcut gears). Think I read somewhere that those gears are available for our transmissions. Please send info or link so I can read up more ... I like to challenge my friends to see what they say.
My transmission post at the top of the forum has a good bit of info about it, but in short the gear detailing (or V cutting as you've heard it termed) does do what you describe. By removing the stress risers (the slag left by the hobbing process) you do reduce the likelyhood of the gear developing stress cracks from repeated cycles. Unfortunately, with gear teeth as tiny as the ones in the 4th gen transmission, even this is not enough. You will still shear the teeth off given enough torque cycles.
In some transmissions, such as DSM transmissions you can get away with just doing this because the teeth are about 2x as thick as 4th gen gear teeth, and the smaller motors generally make less torque than a boosted 3.0 or 3.5 anyways. I eventually broke two detailed gears, mardigras broke his detailed gears, etc. Given enough torque and enough cycles (time), which you will have without question (more than either of us I'm sure), those gear teeth will lay over.
With regards to shot peening, almost all OEM gears are shot peened from the factory (including ours), however, that shot peening only affects the surface of the gear. They are also almost always carburized - which also is only a surface treatment. When you detail the edges of the tooth, you grind away both the shot peening and the carburizing. Re-carburizing the gear is not practical, it would cost an unbelieveable amount of money, but shot peening is. Once you've ground away that shot peened layer on the edges of the gear teeth, it is advisable to get that layer back by having them re-peened. Unforuntately not all shot peening is created equal, there are very specific parameters with regard to media size, media velocity, media angle (the angle at which the shot impacts the gear) etc that have dramatic effects on the effectiveness of shot peening above and beyond the factory shot peening. At the shop I used to work at we saw as much as a 30% increase in burst torque capacity on a DSM gear by shot peening with specific media size at a well established velocity and angle. It can make a significant difference.
About aftermarket gearsets, PPG, PAR, and Quaife all make gear sets for our transmission. I've got the PPG set in mine as does 96sleeper, mooseq30 had the PAR set in his but he sold that trans to someone. You can't go wrong with either set. I actually just dealt with PAR in making a custom gearset for a 350Z and they were absolutely excellent to work with. There are pictures in my gearset thread at the top of the forum of my PPG gears, and pictures of mooseQ30's PAR set in his thread stickied at the top. If my pictures don't work let me know and I can re-host them, I'm well over my photobucket file sharing limit so they may go down periodically until the month cycles then they show up again, untill I surpass my bandwidth limit yet again.

Great info Neal. Thanks so much.... Quick question, do you know if either of those companies have a gear set developped for later-model gear boxes? Reason I ask is that my cousin and I plan on boosting his 2002 3.5 5-spd Altima and I know we will have to address that issue

They do not. How much torque does your cousin plan on putting down? Unless he's going to be putting down well in excess of about 400ft-lb then I probably would not worry about it, the 2002+ maxima and altima transmissions are a good bit stronger than the 4th gen transmission. If he is going to be putting out big-time numbers then you might consider working with PAR or PPG to get a gear set made. PAR worked with mooseQ on his 4th gen 5 speed gear box and also worked with me and my buddy to get a custom gear set for his 350z (that we incidentally just finally installed in the car last night and it works great!). Gerard at PAR is the guy to talk to. It will take significant amount of time and money, but it should never, ever break unless you're shooting for like 800wtq.

I know where you at but i figured between your project on your car and free time maybe you wanted to pioneer a 6sp gear set on my dime. let me know.

Update Here Mostly no time to deal with this before a week ago ... There were some major issues with misfiring and with it not being able to rev past 1500 RPM on the AEM. They are all now fixed. It's ready for tuning but I don't have time right now. It revs SUPER fast and sounds awesome ... but too loud for a street car ... Hope to have time to tune this weekend.

Hi everyone the car is pretty much done! It has taken me a long time to get this done but she's pretty much done. I have a video of it running on the Dyno but not sure how to post it yet. Only made 380WHP at 10psi so far since I did not hook up the boost controller yet. I love the extra torque the VQ35 puts out. It spins the GT40R VERY quickly. Drives pretty good on the street just some TPS sensitivity issues to work through now. Thanks a million to my friends Brent and Jeff at PFI for making this happen! Now I need to clean it up and drive it! The custom twin disk works great ... I just need to put my original clutch master cylinder back on there. The pressure is much better than I had before.
I think it's going to be a fun summer!
Now just need to get my IS300 done! :~

Here is the video. Don't know what happened to the sound here ... I borrowed someone's digital camera cos I wasn't expecting to get this far in a couple of hours. It had some serious problems before we started the pull. not a whole lot to see but at least some progress ...
Yah, I know the car looks like a turd on the outside ... it really needs some TLC on the outside! Also the exhaust has GOT to change!
