NGK BKR6E white residue, not on the tip.

I should have taken a picture but I'm using the NGK BKR6E spark-plugs and after 4k km's driving on them they have this white residue in between the metal and the white surface . Basically its a white powder/residue that goes all around the plug. Does this indicate something?

yes

White residue is usually a sign of running lean.

OC_Nooby 10-06-2010 05:37 PM

On the tip White = Lean. Is it the same if its on the actual white coloured part where it then turns to the metal Hex. In between that? I had it happen when I was running 14.3 A/F...Had the same white residue appear.

Either that or coolant.
Saying it happened running 14.3 doesn't really help. Running 14.3 at idle, cruising or at WOT?

cruising...its not happening in the combustion area.

If it's not running lean or burning coolant, it could simply the fuel you run. Is it Shell by chance?

I run 94 Octane from PetroCanada

I found this pic which describes my issue, mine looks like the last one to the right. You can see the residue. Or imagine if you will where you see that yellowish orange discoloration on the other, mine is white. Should I try a 2 step colder? is this normal?

Oh I see what you're trying to describe now. I thought you were describing white residue on the electrode itself. What you are describing is on the porcelin insulator portion of the plug. I wouldn't worry about it. The yellowish discoloration on the plugs in the picture is most likely corrosion or burn marks from the ignition system tracking. If you think about it, the spark plug boot covers most of the exposed plug, so what you have might just be environmental contamination due to weather conditions, heat cycling of the engine bay, etc...

perfect, thanks!

Yeah what you wanna worry about is the actual electrode / groundstrap, make sure you dont have any black specs on the white, make sure the groundstrap dosnt show specs or melted, or too white, etc...

I'll check, thanks for the tip!
