Anyone have trouble getting rims to fit rear hubs?
 

So I just bought new 18" HP Racing Evo rims for my 99 Maxima. They arrived yesterday and the damn things won't fit on the back without a spacer. The center of the cars hub sticks out to far, and the rims won't go on enough to sit flush on the hub!!! I tried the 1/4" spacers they sent me with the rims, but I am getting a lot of vibration from 65mph and up.

Does anyone know how I can fix this problem??? I would really like to keep these wheels. BTW, the offset is 38mm, as it should be.

Easy...the cap in the rear is only a dust cap. 1. Smash it flat with a hammer or 2. Remove it.

If that is all I need to do I am SO happy. :clap: I'll try that.

yea, good luck, those are nice rims

leave the on and smash them in if you can removing them i have heard can mess some stuff up kinda. i am not sure but i have heard it through the grape vine.

I am getting the same rims....but 19's....how do you get this problem to stop if you want to keep the dust cover???? Bigger spacer?

Carson...just smash the part that's getting in the way. I had to do that with a set of rims that i had.

and by smashing the piece I will not need to use the spacer correct? Thanks for your help tony

My guess is...The dust cap is probably too tall so it hits the center cap part of the rim. If you just smash the edges in enough, you should able to put the rims on. The front axle on the maxima sticks out more than the rear dust cap. I would more worry about the front axle. If all else fails, you can remove the center cap of the rims but that would just be kinda ugly.

i have the same wheels..
and got 1/4 inch spacers for all 4 rims..

you need to get an alignment to get rid of the vibration...

did you get spacers and smash your dust covers or just got spacers and did not smash the dust covers? Because I want to use the center caps with the wheel.

Um, the LAST thing you want to do is to leave off the dust cover!!! It is there for a reason. It keeps sand, tar, salt and other road debris out of your wheel bearings, not to mention keeping the grease where it is supposed to be. Would remove the rubber boot from your CV joint in the front? You may be able to "dimple the cap" a bit, but be careful not too much as to come in contact with parts underneath. If this doesn't provide the clearance, you will most likely need thicker spacers and the corresponding longer wheel studs. If you really like the rims you may be able to have a machinist open the centerbore on the wheels and make you a new center cap. Duplicating the finish is up to you however. Hope that helps!!

Simple method. Cut the tops of the caps off and have someone weld in flat tops.

I think this will be the best solution. I am going to work on my car after work tonight, I'll post what I figure out. Thanks.

Fortunatley the front axle is small enough where it fits through the center of my rim. I will have to make a custom center cap to cover it, but thats not a big deal. I was mostly concerned about not having a proper fit onto the hub. I heard none hubcentric spacers are not good for the car. Plus it's really hard to avoid vibration with them. I will try to smash in the edges like you suggested, and if that doesn't work I will go with removing and having a flat dust cover welded on. Thanks for the help!
