can't decide which way to go
 

I just put the third generation cattman headers on my 03 max. With the extra horsepower I'll need more grip come summer. I'd love to go 18's but cash will be a little tight. So I was thinking I might go with 235/45/17's on the oem wheels. If I was able to get oem 18's at a good price and bought 245/40/18's, would I notice much of a difference in grip? I'm also worried about ride harshness as I have eibachs and illuminas and find the 225/50/17's a bit rough.

Just go for better tires, which in doing so, the size won't matter too much.

^^I agree^^ The Max's suspension is a bit rough with lowering springs, stay with the stock size. With my 19's on i have to swerve around potholes and slow down before hitting bumps, it's really annoying. I'm going to be lowering my G35 pretty soon but don't think I'll have this issue with the G.

Good deal if you ask me and I'm pretty sure that they are at least .5 inch's wider than your stock wheels.

If that doesn't suit your needs, then like Semy2k2Go said, just get good tires and you'll be set. :)

edit-keep in mind that if you go with a bigger wheel, your speedometer will be off a little

You want wider wheels. Go with 17x8.5 all around with a 235 or 245 tire. If you can't get new wheels, stick with your current wheels and get a better performing tire with a max performance rating.

i know larger diameter doesn't give more grip. The question asks, will I get that much more grip with a 245 on an 18 than a 235 on a 17. Will there be a huge difference?

unfortunately shipping to me will be a little high, and customs will suck rocks. I'll look for 18's locally if I can get them.

This is the answer folks. Increase MPG by 12-15%. Makes the car feel much more willing/able, and all that power will be put down to the ground much more effeciently

umm, ok dumb question, are the oem 17's on the 03 7" wide?

I was looking at rims for the hell of it and most lightweight 17's are 17x8 . Assuming the oem's are 7" will I have rubbing issuses with a 40mm offset with an 8" rim?

OEM wheels are 17x7, yes.

None whatsoever.

I have 8" wide, and have 15mm spacers in the rear to go with that. Depends on offset.

Stock are +45, and so are my 17's. No rubbing here.

so you basically have a 30 mm offset then? I'm a bit confused because I saw a set of rims I would like and they are 17 x 8 and the tire size is still 225/50/17 even though they are 1" wider. I thought the tire size on an 8" rim would be around 255

If you get a 17x8 rim, get 235x45x17's... I have run them on a 7' (stockers)wide rim for years with no problems, wider is better!

I'm short on cash because the headers/catback cost a fortune thanks to brokerage fees and installation. Plus I want to tune. I'll probably just get toyo proxes for the oems at the 235/45 size.
But can someone explain the math to me? A 7" wide rim uses a 225mm wide tire, yet a 8" rim which is 25mm wider uses the same width tire according to tirerack.com One would think that a 245 or 255 would be the tire size on an 8" rim.

I just have personal experiance with 235/45/17's... Some will tell you that you cannot use them on a 7" rim, but you can.

Also said ealier, if you can get light weight 17x8's that is the best of both worlds... Less rotational mass = better perfomance and wider rims = more grip....

Stock 17's are HEAVY POS...

A 235 tire is "flush fitting" on an 8" wide wheel.
A 255 tire is "flush fitting" on a 9" wide wheel.
By that, I mean the tire width, when mounted on the wheel, is most equal to the wheel width. The tire will appear to be "flush" with the lip of the wheel. It won't buldge out or be stretched in.

You can run a wide variety of tire sizes on a given wheel width. You can run 215 or even 205 on an 8" wide wheel if you want. The tire will just look stretched across the width of the wheel and your speedo may be off depending on the sidewall ratio of the tire.

If I had the cash, I'd lean towards the oz ultraleggera's 17x8 with toyo proxes T1R tires in 235/45/17. (Or the superleggera's 18 x 8 hyper black with polished lip.) But I think what I will do is go with the T1R's this year on the OEM's and go for the rims next year. Then I'll just swap the tires over to the new rims.
