Can cracked rims be repaired?

Hey there,

can cracked rims be repaired?
i'm going to see a seller tonight after work and he is selling a set of rims for cheap but one of the rims is cracked apparently. Is that something that rim repair shops can fix or does cracks mean the rim is done?

i checked a couple of rim repair websites and they dont mention anything about cracked rims....
  • Rim Straightening
  • Curb Damage
  • Factory OE Wheel
    Replacements
  • Chrome Wheels
  • Corrosion
  • Custom Color Matching
  • Polishing
  • Restoration of Brake Calipers
    and Wheel Dust Shields
  • Restoration of Lug Nuts

thanks!!!

no man there is no repairing cracked rims, and if there was if a place that would do it i would not trust it, its safer for you and your car to replace it as soon as possible...every pothole and bump you hit will slowly damage the rim even more....

Yes, cracked rims can be repaired.

One of the best in wheel repair:
http://www.wheelsamerica.com/index.php?page=main

From their facts page:
Q11. I have a cracked wheel, can it be repaired?
A11. Most of the time a cracked wheel can be repaired, but it is dependent on where the crack is located and how large it is. We recommend you get in touch with your nearest location and they can speak with you about if your damage is repairable.

cracks are case by case, but most can be fixed as stated above.

on a related note, i used to recommend wheels america because i worked in a shop next to one and they always got the job done. older and wiser i have seen what REAL rim repair looks like and wouldn't settle for less. i'd say find an independent repair shop with a good repuatation in your area.

Thanks for the response guys,

i went to check the rims today and the crack is located on the outer edge, it is about an inch long and it is slightly bent where it cracked, he told me local shops could repair it for about a hundred dollars.

im supposed to call him back tomorrow!

fyi: the rims are 20's wrapped on 245 35 20 for 500

but i got a 2 inch dropped worried it might rub, but ive searched all over the org i think im good? 245 35 20 seems to be the recommended size

pretty much anything in a 20" on a <6g is going to be outside of the "recommended" range. 225-235/30-20 would be correct size wise but no one wants to run that small of a tire.

Ive only had bad luck with trying to get a cracked rim repaired.
My dads saab had a hairline crack in the rim. They said it couldnt be repaired.

Prolly why I see so many good deals on rims where 1 is cracked..

Yes cracked rims can be repaired

Depending on the crack, rims can be safely repaired. Purchasing a wheel can be expensive depending on the make & model and in many cases it can be very hard to find if it is discontinued. Repairing a wheel can be the cheaper option. When a wheel is repaired right, it's very safe to drive on and it will function like a brand new wheel. To read more about safe & unsafe cracks on alloy wheel click on the link below. It is very descriptive and it provides pictures.
