My new piece arrived last evening.

When I replace things this weekend, I'll get this data as well.

I didn't tell my daughter I changed anything on the 98 model after I installed it. This is her daily driver. Let's see if she notices a difference.

My Q45 daily driver has a Level10 transmission that was built for the drag strip. The transmission was originally built by Level10 for the Nicoclub founder's Q45. I got the transmission after the 2nd owner converted the car to use a Z-car 5-speed. The transmission was refreshed by Level10 before I installed it. It has very pronounced shifts that most people would find to be a bit harsh. I like the crisp shifts. So it always feels strange when I drive any other normal automatic.

Hmmm...I'm skeptical, but sounds great nonetheless. I don't think this should be a replacement for transmission fluid replacement.

I was having a sudden issue with my auto trans getting stuck at 4000 RPM, doing weird shifting and then the OD light blinking at start up. I thought my transmission was on it's way out. A drain, flush and fill solved it to where it now shifts better and had no problems since. Guess it was overdue.

Ive also had the occasional hard shift into second gear problem during cold weather. This can happen after spinning in snow/mud/sand (I've been stuck in all 3). I've found allowing the transmission to warm up before taking off and shifting thru all gears from park to L occasionally, gets rid of it for good.

nice maintenance awareness. This drop resistor does help with the auto trans shifting. This mod is used for na or fi for the full pressure line shifting at all times when it's disconnected. P.s it's cold out here in bmore 18' degrees. Stay warm everyone.

My car was sent to Denver around 1997 from past found documents. So it should be accustomed to cold?

Whenever it gets cold, it does all sorts of weird ****. It once locked me out, engine running, in 18 degree whether. The alarm can go off at random, and alternators and batteries have given up.

It can handle the cold, but it prefers warm weather.

BTW - My daughter reports that "it runs better." Which means she likes it. I drove it around yesterday and it seems to drive just fine. I've spent more on trying stuff of less value. So maybe I've avoided a future problem.

2 things cs, : 1 do YOU notice a difference, and 2: was there a problem in the first place? like slow shifting from 1st to 2nd?

I drive the car about once a week. I think it shifts slightly smoother and more predictable when it's cold. I don't remember it having a delayed shift from 1st to 2nd or a specific problem.

Installed mine this past Friday ... I can detect no difference in the car's behavior.

I'm not complaining.

The replacement of a 17 year old resistor is probably a smart thing to to do.

17? mines 22 years old, placebo. what works for some may not change anything for others. any little bit helps i guess.

I think the good news about this is we now know what can be behind hard, delayed, and unpredictable shifts. It is something to check instead of fishing for a solution in ATF brands, filters, valve bodies, solenoids, and etc..

Maintenance before mods.

Or are the drop resistor and the fluid change both considered maintenance?

Either way, somehow the user should be informed that they should refresh the tranny fluid first before indulging in the drop resistor.

^^ Agree. Keeping up with fluid changes is a given. Especially if the fluid appears to be dirty/contaminated, has a burned smell, or the last change information is unknown.

From Skywalker's post below, it looks like the resistor can be easily Ohm tested to see if resistance is starting to move out of spec range. I read in the OP that the resistor had been swapped. It wasn't until a newer resistor was installed that finally solved the problem. It would be interesting to know the Ohm readings of resistors that exhibit problems to see if a drift out of range will predict a future issue.

question, if i'm stepping on the gas and she's whining and seems to be shifting slow is that a selenoid in the trans or the drop resistor? i checked the fluid, smells and looks ok to me, replaced trans about 2 years ago with a low mileage tranmission ( around 85,000k ) so i'm thinking i'm going to plug in my new drop resistor and see if that helps.

Give it a try B. You've got the part. It's easy to replace. I cleaned the plug contacts then put a little amount of dielectric grease on the plug to protect the connection and make it easy to unplug at some point in the future.

well, i went to replace the resistor and the air box was in the way, and i noticed the resistor was rusted pretty good on the outside so i'm wondering what she looks like on the inside. was getting dark and decided to wait till xmas morn to replace. while i'm in there i'm replacing this as well. ( $12.00 off of ebay, feels pretty solid )

Driving with the new one for a couple of days now (doing 40+ miles round trip per day). The transmission feels a little better, especially with the down-shifting on the highway when i take my foot of the gas.

it's nice to step on the gas and have the car move again. i was getting a whine and no throttle, took forever to get her moving. the idle even went back up to 900-1000 rpm's and stay's there now. probably fixing that air intake hose fixed that issue. would recommend replacing for as cheap as ebay sells them. got mine for 12.00 bux.

I just ordered mine to fix try to fix my eractic shift issues as well. I know it's just a matter of unplug and plug in new one but does battery need to be disconnected when doing this? I will install it when it comes and let you all know the results.

Success!!

Well today I put the new resistor in and low and behold that fixed the hard shifts and delayed shifts and the lundging as u were slowing to a stop!!!! And man talk about smooth shifting and acceleration! Wow kid u not just like others have said it runs like when it was new. My wife drove it after I did and could not believe it. It's her car and drives it every day so she knows exactly how it drove before. Thank you guys on this board for all your knowledge!!

Trans speed sensor?

Well today it did shift just a little bit late according to my wife. It did not shift real hard like before but it did shift a bit late. Would also changing the transmission speed sensor also help? Should they both be changed out at the same time? After reading about the trans speed shifters function it seems like it has a lot to do with the signal from the tranny to the computer. What u all think?

Changing transmission speed sensor makes a big differenece but thats not the only sensor that has an impact on the transmission. A MAF sensor going bad can also causes issues with shifting engine performance. I had to change my maf also to get everything working right because the maf was acting up and causing performance problems. Now after doing both things, not once has the transmission delayed or lagged when shifting or taking off from a stop. Take a look at your maf. KEEP in Mind, The Maf must be original nissan unisia jecs maf sensor, otherwise aftermarket mafs can cause problem and dont work well with 4th gens.

Ok

Thanks for the info 97SE. I cleaned the MAF recently but I think I will just get a new one. This trans speed shifter behind the drivers side wheel I have seen some with what looks like a gear and some do not have the gear looking thing so which one is the one I get? My car is a 2001 maxima.

Also on the MAF do I just get the sensor of the whole canister type thing with the screen that is attached to the sensor? Best place to get it?

Its the canister looking part with the screen. It comes as one unit. To identify a Unica JECS, there should be a pink label like the one in the first video.

Sometimes we have members selling used ones. I pick up mine from salvage yards. The MAF is one of those items where many of us keep a spare on hand.

I see yours has been recently cleaned. Chris Fix has an interesting video on cleaning a MAF.
