Faulty regulator? Bad ground? Battery done?

Last week the old "brake & battery" light combo came on in the 95 Maxima. Limped it home and bought a new Bosch alternator. Installed it (tons of fun) with the help of this forum.

She fired up and began to charge the battery. I checked the voltage at the battery with my meter and it was pushing 29v! It appears I didn't have the ground connected properly (did not remove factory nut on ground terminal on the alt, I'm a dummy). I fixed that, but when I went to reconnect the battery it popped the 140a fuse. Had to order one in from the dealer. Picking it up tomorrow.

Left my battery disconnected all day and it's still holding 29v. Is there an easy way to drain some of that charge, or is my battery screwed? Is it possible that it was the regulator in the new alt, or was it most likely the bad ground? I really hope I don't have to do that whole alternator swap again lol.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks.

Turns out my meter was out of wack. Borrowed the neighbours and the disconnected battery shows 12.7. Any ideas what would have caused my 140 to pop? Must be a short somewhere, right?
