Who has removed their muffler at the track? -->

I am looking for cheap and free mods for the track. I already ordered a testpipe from WSP and I am going to remove my muffler for the track. Oh yeah, I already have a Y-pipe.

Does anyone have any experiences they can relate to me? I'm wondering who here knows if my 'muffler removal' will hurt me, help me, or make no difference. TIA.

Aaron

It will hurt you because your car won't be any faster but you will look stupid and everyone will laugh.

That must be the fastest response I have ever gotten.

So, you have removed your muffler at the track and it didn't help you AT ALL? I seriously don't care what I will look like at the track. Thanks.

I did this once when I was running my friends camaro on the street so i know it helps minorly but......... you will be 3 times as loud as any fart pipe ricer you have ever heard. And it just happens that I did it on my 93 se so I wouldn't recommend it. Matt

So you did it on your 93 SE at the track? Did your times change at all or did your 60' suffer much?

I realize it's going to be loud... VERY LOUD. Hmm.. my friend has a cherry bomb just sitting around. That should quiet it down ever so slightly and still flow very nicely. Maybe I can unbolt my muffler and bolt on the glasspack JUST for the track. What do yall think?

And, what? Someone got kicked out of a 1/4 mile track for being too loud? What the crap? It's a drag strip... 50% of the cars out there are running open headers on big blocks and an import guy got kicked out? He was doing something wrong.

no I did it a while back when I stayed with my parents back home on our 2 lane back road. I raced before and after and actually did pull a little harder on my friends v6 camaro but it could have been a worse launch for him. I think the 92-94 mufflers had terrible restriction and yes I do think it would yield better times at the track without it but I would put a strait through or something on it than no muffler at all. Ok thanks Matt. I realize it's going to be funny to here my quiet sleeper awaken and bring the ruckus. Maybe I can easily bolt up the glasspack. They suck, but it'll be better than no muffler at all.

If you think you are going to get any gains from a muffler you are sadly mistaken. You won't run any faster without one, except maybe because you'll save about 10lbs of dead weight on your car. Not to mention you will look like a retard.

So, I assume you have tried it on your Maxima? Some people are saying it will help me, some say it won't make a difference, and some say it'll hurt me. I got a question, how is it that aftermarket catback exhausts are proven to help in the 1/4 mile? So, with me removing my muffler, won't that be better? Who here has actually done it in their V6?

Jeff.. I'm way ahead of you. My 60' was decreased from a 2.39 to a 2.32 just by the AC belt.

And Steve, if my AC belt helped that much, then I wonder how much the Altenator belt will help. I know some cars will absolutely NOT run without having a good altenator. But, do our cars rely on the altenator at all times to make the engine run smoothly? Good idea though.

No, I've not tried it. A full catback gives a couple HP, maybe 3. Removing the muffler won't give you any HP if you are still using the crappy stock B-pipe, the exhaust gasses still have to flow through the B-pipe. The muffler is not a major restriction.

EricDWong removed his entire exhaust and went to the track, he didn't run any faster. But sure made alot of noise.

Please don't add insult to injury. We have enough Honda owners out there running without mufflers in the 16 or 17 sec range blowing our ears out. It doesn't help at all unless you want people to start hating Maxima's too.

Nealoc is right.

Ok, thanks. I understand. I have a new idea that I throw out the window since it will probably cause leaks and make a lot of noise. An exhaust cutout made by Flowtech. I was thinking of installing it right after the testpipe, so it will bypass the B-pipe and muffler. I know it will be VERY LOUD. But it was just an idea that could get me in the 14's NA. I appreciate the facts and opinions... keep em coming. Thanks.
