1-2-D shifting?
i read about some people doing a "1-2-D" manual shifting with their auto and they got a better time at the tracks. just wondering what that is and how it works? at what point do you shift? does it help? does it hurt the tranny? sorry about all the questions

This has been discussed many times during the past few weeks... From what I know it will NOT damage your tranny shifting up but downshifting will.. Pretty inconclusive.. Some say it helped track times some say it slowed them down.. It all depends on you.. Try it and find out

Well, I cant really tell if it helps honestly. But for some reason, I tend to think it does. When you start off in 1st I seem to have a Better Jump off the line and it feels stronger then when the car does it, Then Shift when it gets to redline to 2nd, and you will pull in 2nd then shift to D(3rd) when it redlines again. It wont realy hurt the tranny if you dont do it everyday. Make sure if your racin, turn your O/D off. It Helps for 3rd gear.

Tomorrow when I hit the drags again I'll try a couple runs in "D" and some doing the 1-2-D shifting. I would think that by shifting it myself, I can let it rev higher, therefore when it shifts into 2nd, the RPM's are higher, which means I'm deeper into powerband. That sounds like a good thing. But that's just speculating. Will try it out for real tomorrow

Well I tried this tonight at the strip. Result: 1-2-D is slightly quicker, but it could have been my launch too. Basically no difference. I think my trap speed was the lowest doing this, but only by like 1/10th of a MPH

It's pointless. Tranny won't shift any faster, and you will risk the odds of just hitting the fuel cut at redline/screwing yourself up if you wait too long - chances are when you're shifting the computer's about to do the shift itself anyways.
