Slick size for MEVI/ECU'd 95 5-spd
Last year I ran at the track with my SSR Type Cs wrapped in Firestone Firehawk SZ50EPs... as you can guess they are also my daily drivers. THe problem with that is if I keep this up I will burn througha set of tires every season! I am not prepared to spend that much money on an ongoing basis on tires.
So the simple solution is to spend the money on another pair of relatively lighter rims and slicks. I was browsing around on this site that carries import drag slicks: http://www.intercotire.com/html/body_import-drag.htm
I want to clarify a couple of things to make sure that I go for the right tire size.
Option 1:
MHR-21: 7.5/23-15 - This will go on a 15" x 6" wide rim which is good but pretty rare for slicks. However I am not sure about the 23" tire diameter... with stock being 25.2" that is a difference of 8.7%. My goal is to not have to shift into 4th gear, with my 7200RPM rev limiter. According to my calculations, 7200RPM in 3rd gear on our 5-spd tranny would be 111mph with stock 25.2" tires. But with 23" slicks, my 3rd gear will top out at about 100 - 101 mph which isn't enough (I trap 96-97mph before the JWT ECU which means I am already over 100mph by the time I cross the finish line). So I am thinking that this slick might be too small - thoughts?
Option 2:
MHR-60: 6.0/26.0-15 - This will also go on a 15x6 rim which is good. The 26" diameter will make sure that I stay in 3rd when I cross the finish line. HOWEVER would it be a liability off the line?
Option 3:
MHR-25: 8.5/24.5-15 - This needs to go on a 15x8 rim which is hard to find in a lightweight design that is cheap. But the 24.5" diameter seems perfect... or is it getting a little too close to needing to shift into 4th at the finish line? According to my calculation, 7200RPM in 3rd with this diameter tire is 108mph... so I SHOULD be okay for under 100mph trap speeds... ? But considering that I cannot find a 15x8 rim that is light and cheaper, this might not even be a possibility.
BTW most slicks are for 8" wide rims, but I am looking at the only two 6" wide slicks on that site because there is a Mazda OEM rim in 15x6 that is quite light and can be gotten quite cheap.
Any advice and suggestions are appreciated. Is there another feasible option that I have not considered yet?

What RPMs did you launch off the line at (assuming you did a clutch drop)? I have tried sliding but it always seems to slow me down... with the occasional perfect slide yielding better results.
I haven't run with my JWT ECU yet... so I will do that on my SZ50EPs to get a comparison vs. my 14.49 last year with just MEVI... then the slicks go on!

I guess autos have that buffer though. I just needed reassurance on the 26". If anything I thought that it would let me drop off the line at a higher RPM and have more room for the slicks to flex with the extra 3".

I hope the ECU is all that it is cracked up to be... for me!

Now for slicks, I assume you guys got the M&H Racemasters... but where did you get it from and what is the best price? I foung them on www.jegs.com for $142US a piece I think... can I do any better (this is for the MHR-60: 6.0/26-15 that go on 6" rims)

I bought mine directly through M&H I think they were $154 a piece at the time.
I don't have cartest or the inclination to do the calculations at this time, but I think 111mph on 26" diameter wheels is a bit high in 3rd gear with 7200rpm. I cross the line at about 7000rpm on the 26" slicks when trapping 102. 102 is the average of my speed over the last 66 feet so maybe 103 is the max speed I am actually getting to. If I were to guess I would say that 3rd would top out at about 107ish but if you did the math and doublechecked it I guess you're right.

I made a spreadsheet that uses gear ratios + tire size to calculate speed @ RPMs. I've checked and verified that it is accurate. I am looking to get the exact same slicks as you actually... I just saw today that you have the same ones that I had decided on.
Out of curiosity, when you ran your bone stock time of 14.7, what kind of rims and tires did you have on then?

17" konig verdicts and kumho 712s. heavy and cheap. I don't know what they weighed because I didn't care about that stuff then, but I would guess ~23 for the wheels and ~24-25 for the tires. it was 14.8 not 14.7 i think only veetec ran a 14.7 stock.
