First time to the track this year...Really bothered...

Union Grove WI. Great Lakes Dragway. 55 degrees at the track. Elevation really isn't a factor. No wind. Full street trim, 3/8ths tank of BP 93 octane, driver is 290lbs.

1) Fun runs for free, I thought what the heck, get in pay spectator fee and get to run...Well, I quickly found out they were cutting corners, more on that...

Ran 10 times, got 5 slips for 14 second runs and 5 slips for 15 second runs. Worst time of the day was:

RT .217 (running on .000 clocks)
60' 2.439
1/8 9.864
MPH 74.26
1/4 15.176
MPH 93.10

Best time of the day was:

RT .388
60' 2.341
1/8 9.578
MPH 75.11
1/4 14.839
MPH 93.82

Also ran 2.343 60' 14.906 93.74
2.314 60' 14.920 93.78
2.407 60' 14.954 93.71
2.359 60' 14.961 93.64
2.392 60' 15.041 92.89
2.396 60' 15.090 92.90
2.492 60' 15.109 93.23
2.439 60' 15.116 93.32

1) There was no track prep to speak of. They did not spray down track bite (VHT) at all during the night. Everybody complained of their poor 60' times. I tried to come out at 2000rpms, 1500 rpms, 1000 rpms, no brake torque, but everything I tried was in vain, I spun for about 4 car lengths before hooking up, no joke...The track was super slippery, not conducive to good times at all, everybody was running 3/10th's slow. This just goes to show how much track prep matters. Cheap bastids.

2) Went up with some other orgers, Sam (Chitwista), Xander (Xmax) Steve (Slimer). I will let them post their own times, but will mention I ran next to Sam, and although I got the jump on him (courtesy of a wink from the evil red eye) he still tracked me down and passed me, on his way to a 3 car lenght spanking. All I have to say is

3) Cattman Y-pipe really didn't do much. I can notice a pickup only from a roll, not from a dead stop. I should really get the intake thrown on for good measure, esp with the Chicagoland Nissan/Infiniti track meet next Saturday...I cant be this bad again.

So so bad. So ridiculous. I guess I got accustomed to running 2.2xx with good prep and new tires, but the short times I was cutting today were ridiculous. F-body guys were cutting 2.2 on street tires, so it was all of us suffering out there...

...sounds like Ennis, Tx to me. It really sucks when they don't prep the track.

It was still fun.. But yes the track conditions just didn't seem right.. My mods for the night was 2.5" cat back exhaust, vb mod, injen intake, 50 shot, 18" chrome wheels.. Here were my times:

Best MPH -
.121
2.434
6.362
9.487
78.15
12.183
14.441
101.18

Best E/T -
.379
2.336
6.172
9.287
79.04
14.257
100.65

My previous best was 14.08 @ 101.8.. Hopefully I will be able to smash this time on the 17th with my D/R's and 75 shot.. We will see..

It was cool to meet you Fernando and have a friendly run against another Maxima owner.. PZ

Yeah it was fun, there were some really hot cars out there. My friend Joey with the black MR2 ran 14.37 at 99.7, courtesy of a mbc dialed up to 15lbs on stock turbo and injectors. Those little cars are nasty!

It was cool meeting you Sam, and seeing the guys again. Your guy with the SE-R ran 15.9, that should tell you about how slick the tracks are. SE-R's should be running mid 15's no sweat...

If you were ever to return the car to stock bro, and run your mods, you'd be trapping 103 easy. Your wheels and audio/video stuff adds weight, but your is still nasty fast!

I will see you around man.

Don't worry about those runs to much. Just wait till you go to byron to see how your car is doing. Free runs are not worth anything at a crappy track.

I had the same frustration at GLD. Sorry I couldn't make it last night guys but I was down there on Sunday. I was very disappointed with my runs. My best was:

60' 2.313
330' 6.447
1/8 9.87
1/4 15.37
MPH 89.11

This was at 40 degrees, strong head wind, 150Ibs Weight reduction, and my mods listed below. Also, this was my first run ever and I forgot to turn the OD off. On the next 6 runs I couldn't break 15.4 w/ OD off. What is the deal?

I wouldn't start worrying until you run on a track with decent prep. Even with your poor 60 foots I would have thought you'd have better MPHs with the Y-pipe. Go to Byron, I'm sure you'll pull a best there. Every track is different. A great example is when Mike ran his I30 at a track in Oklahoma a few months back. His car was stuck deep in the 14.6-14.7s@94-95mph and he thought something might be wrong with his car. Then last week he goes to Byron and he's is back to his normal 14.2-14.3s@98-99mph. There was nothing wrong with his car, it was the track.

Yep. I never fully bought into the whole "slow track, fast track" thing until I ran at a crappy track. Not everyone is blessed to have a well preped, fast track close to them (Dave). But if you are lucky enough to have one, there is no reason to waste your time going anywhere else.

Good to know. You guys think I could attain a 15 flat if I went to Byron. Anyone have a link to their site, if they have one?

GLD is one of the worst tracks in the country in my opinion. Not that I have been to every track in the country but I've been to 10 different tracks if my memory is correct, and GLD is the worst. I love racing but I wouldn't even bother going there if it was free.

Neal, I always read how you and Mike considered GLD the worst track in our area, and it would make me chuckle, but now I KNOW you guys are right. Hopefully I can shave a couple or 3/10th's off my crappy et's when we run next Saturday April 17th.

Dave, you picked up on something important with the y-pipe trap speed deal. The car is basically making strong stock car trap speeds, nothing more nothing less. I ran 94 mph SIX TIMES last year on my last track visit of the year, but it was 43 degrees 30% humidity, car running extremely well, bp fuel.

Since it's unlikely I will ever be able to go again in those exact conditions, it's tough to compare and say concretely whether the y-pipe is doing anything at all. The trap is the only real gauge, and right now its about normal, so...

Season still early. This Sunday, intake goes on. We shall see what I can pull at the track with intake/ypipe combo...

Give it a few more track days at a good/quick/well prepped track and I think you'll be pleased. If Byron is nearby, I wouldn't waste my time anywhere else. I'd love to give Byron a shot if it wasn't 10 hours away Years ago I ran my Z28 at an F-Body meet at Houston Raceway Park (HRP). My Z28 pulled a best of a 13.4@103mph with a 2.0 60' in 80 degree heat. Here in Kansas City, the best the car could ever do was 13.8@101mph with a 2.0 60' in 50 degree weather. Some tracks are just better than others. I hope you land some good ET/MPHs at Byron. Hopefully at least a 14.6@95mph or something. You should consider short DRs or slicks. It seems like the autos really take to the extra gearing of the short tires.

14.60 at 95mph is actually my target et and trap. This is before I go out and buy BFG's...Thanks for the suggestions!

Yeah, some tracks are better than others, its really freaky, but it's true...Let's hope for the best.

FYI, a bunch of us Chicago giys are heading to Byron next Saturday. We have about 25-30 guys going, so it should be tons of fun.

Good luck at Byron.

Sounds like GLD is similar to the tracks I've been to. Either they have no prep or the V8's are laying down so much rubber it's like a skating rink out there. One of these days I will get the "hook-on" and run something decent instead of spinning 1/2-way through 2nd.
