6spd owners who've tracked their car
I recently tracked my 6spd at the local 1/8th mile track...here are the results
-almost sea level track 800ft above I believe
-Temp was in the low 60s high 50s...dunno humidity but i'm sure it wasn't that high
-Ran with full interior including 50lbs sub box and 10lbs amp
-front tire pressure at 29psi to help wheelspin
-3/8th tank of 91 octane chevron gasoline
-Mods are : Berk midpipe/APEX-i Intake, Cattman Catback Exhaust, ES Motor Mounts, SSR Type C lightweight 18x8.5 w/Pirelli PZERO NERO M+S 245/40/18
-Slipping the clutch pretty aggressively at 2500RPM-ish (its kinda hard to keep a steady RPM cuz of the drive by wire)
My times went the following...
9.69@77.09mph w/ 2.48 60ft
9.94@76.97mph w/ 2.61 60ft
9.80@77.01mph w/ 2.57 60ft
9.61@77.40mph w/ 2.46 60ft
Just wanted to hear your opinions on this...my trap speed seems kind of alright...I know I have to work on my 60ft thats for sure...but I don't blame myself for gettin these times cuz it was my first time tracking this car...and the 6spd is definitely tricky to launch (trickier than my old 4th gen 5spd)
Is anybody trapping the same speed in the 1/8th mile with the same mods and setup (full interior and track conditions) as me? Does anybody know if my trap speed will go up if I had a better launch?

this looks great ! you are right about your 60 foots, but mine were just like that when i first went. do you recall what rpm you were launching at ?
i tell ya im jealous of the vq35de, even with the weight, minor mods, and 60's that need work your mph looks nice, but as you were asking about trap speeds going up or down with better launch, im not sure, just guessing i thought they might get lower with better launch, but im not sure.
Did you get any video footage?

Sup ceasar! thanks for the input.....yes I do have footage captured on my camcorder but I lack the hardware necessary to upload videos....haha....
well thanks for giving me the thumbs up....it' feels good to be commented by a great maxima driver like you....as a matter of fact....I have followed your progress since u joined the .org....I remember when u were a 15 second max even with bolt ons....hehe...i also remember that one vid were u also beat that slow *** EVO....now you've turned into one of the fastest all motor maximas without a MEVI.....I hope to go your route with some practice....hitting some sweet numbers just with time n practice....
anyway the local 1/8th mile track i go to is real real sticky....the track is well taken care of by the locals....so I know it's not the track thats holding me back...its my driving skill....hope to master my launch down pretty soon....i've gotten my 1-2 and 2-3 shift down pretty well...it's just the launch I needa work on....

Hey - looks about right, definatly work on the launch! But the trap speeds seem about right, probly could gain another 1 maybe 2 mph with real good driving. Try some weight reduction next time ya hit the track - it always helps my times. Readin you're post makes me want to hit the track again
can't wait till May!! Good job man, work on that launch and you'll put down some nice times

I gotta hand it to ya. Those are decent times for the 60fts. Your car definately has potential. With an intake and cattman y-pipe I ran a best of 14.269 @ 97.76. My 60 ft was 2.272 and the 1/8 th was passed at 9.264@78.49. If you improve your 60s it will make a big difference. You should be able to with the 245 footprint.
On another note I saw you have the cattman catback. Is it worth the money? Ya know, does it have a nice throaty growl to it, and did you notice a difference in your top end? I was also curious about your motor mounts. My 03 seems to be rocking in between acceleration. Did you have the same problem? Thanks,
Bruce

thanks for the input bruceman....I believe the cattman exhaust is worth it....to some extent yes...I say this becuz....if you don't plan on getting headers, then the stock exhaust is fine....say you just right an intake, stock headers, stock cat, bpipe and stock muffler....then that setup is cheap and effective...but I bought the headers and catback becuz I am going full out.....
right now i dont have my headers in....and yes I do feel some what of a difference in top-end..... but it ain't noticeable until I get my headers.....I say if money isn't an issue for you....yes go full cattman...but if money is an issue....just get a Bpipe and keep the stock muffler....the 5th gen variable muffler already flows very well....
yes my ES motor mounts made a BIG difference....i love it....all the power is being sent to the ground now....before with my shot OEM mounts....I would get ALOT of wheel hop in 1st gear.....now I just get wheelspin becuz all the power is being directed to the floor.....

Your 18s might be the prob here. I gotta imagine it would make it not only more difficult to luanch but also drop your trap speed slightly. As for trap speed depending on luanch, bogging will give you a slightly lower trap while spinning will usually give you a sightly higher trap. Based on your 60's I am guessing you are spinning the tires, which means you are giving it too much gas too soon and possibly letting the clutch out too quickly. Keep practicing and you should be able to drop your 60's to the 2.1xx range... that is unless your 18s are holding you back. I understand about keeping the rpms steady... it can be a pain to do it right. I dont think 2500rpm is all that agressive. Once I learned how to launch well I started actually launching at about 2800. Of course it all depends on the conditions of the track. Try to avoid a day in which a lot of slicked cars are there. For each 0.1 lower in the 60' you generally get 0.2 lower in the 1/4mi (this is an estimation). I am not quite sure how it translates in the 1/8th as I have never looked at it to find a correlation. As for weight reduction, removing all the stuff in the trunk and all weather mats should be a minimum (in your case you should remove all that excess audio baggage). Some people go as far as to remove the rear and passenger seat.
Bruceman, everybody who has the ES mounts loves them. I have a set sitting in my garage right now, but I havent found the time to get them put it

sup bgates.....u really think my 18s are holding me back? hmm....but they only weigh 16lbs flat and 43lbs with my pzero nero....the tires are 27lbs according to edge racing in my tire size (245/40/18).....i thought stock wheel weight on a 2k2 was like 50lbs or more? i do realize i am running a +1 size up.....
Hmm well being that they are lighter than stock that will help. Without running any numbers I wouldnt be able to even give you a guess as to whether they are helping or hurting. Based on that info I cant imagine they are too far from stock either way.
Your trapspeed seems a bit low if you ask me, I would expect it to be 80 with your mods. Also, the VQ35 seems to like 93 octane alot, I dont know if its available where you are. The launch technique sounds right though... Are you spinning alot? I did 9.01 in my Altima 3.5 5spd w/ 2.162 60ft on my stock bridgestone turanzas then the next time I went I put my brothers 18" SSR Competitions w/ Toyos and couldnt get traction at all, just spinning so badly.. best 60ft was 2.4X and did a 9.37. The lighter wheels w/ very low profile tires make it hard to get a good launch. If you are serious about tracking your car, I would get some lightweight 15" or 16" wheels for the front with some drag radials or slicks.. it would help tremendously.
P.S. don't forget to take out any unncessary weight next time (sub/amp, etc.. that also helps) and noticed you're at 800ft elevation that contributes a little. I think i'm only about 500ft here.
Your 9.6 in the 1/8th is about 14.7-14.8 in the 1/4 mile.. just multiply by 1.55 to get a general idea. Thats what my SpecV did was 9.58/14.87 but the vqs have a much better topend so I'd say 14.70

thanks steve and bgates for your input. steve, I want a catback for some topend, but also for the sound, not a rice drone, but a nice v6 growl. Does the cattman have it? I don't intend to go all out, but I do NEED to get a catback, straight pipe, and chip(most likely techno square). I don't want to worry about emissions, and the straight pipe is an easy swap. also thanks for responding about the mm. btw where can you buy the ES mounts? thanks again.
I bought mine from Cattman....theres also another vendor callled suspension.com or something...they are both the same price..so you take your pick....
yes the cattman catback sounds very deep in my opinion....I can't wait to put the headers on....heard the noise changes drastically with cattman headers+catback....

Steven, I just ran my 02 6speed Max last night for the first time. My best time at the 1/8 was 9.273 @ 77.172 with a 2.168 60 ft. I am bone stock down to the air filter. This run equated to a 14.423 @ 92.026 in the 1/4 (I hit the rev limiter on the topend/did). I absolutely had to ride the clutch off the line to get any decent time. I was even getting bad wheel hop on the 1 - 2 shift. Sounds like I need motor mounts too. Most of my runs were in the 74 mph range at the 1/8th. I would also loose the 18's at the track like others have mentioned.
I hope this helps,

hey gears & crosses....your track #s are stunning....bone stock 6spd running 77mph traps? wow....haha I'm modded and i'm trapping the same speed....well I do have extra junk like my subs.....but whatever.....why do ppl say to ditch the 18s? I mean they are only +1 size up....and they are WAAAY lighter than the stock 17s that come with the 2k2.....about 8lbs difference (42lbs vs 50lbs)....
oh yeah one other thing...what technique did u use to launch? what RPM? alot of slippage or more towards a dump? elaborate more plz =)

hey....79mph trap is really fast for a stock 3.5....at least thats wut i researched so far....
Emax trapped 79mph with i/y/e/udp....also Ynot411 trapped only 79mph too with i/h/e....I believe ripper did something similiar too....79mph with bolt-ons...
I know my 77mph is sort of on the weak side....but at the same time I had alot of junk in the car (65lbs sound system, spare, jack, misc stuff)....that definitely contributes to why my car traps 77 with intake,exhaust.....if I got rid of my sound system and my spare...I could prob easily trap 78 cuz all that stuff together will weigh over 100lbs....
i'm still out of the norm at 78mph w/intake and exhaust....versus your STOCK 79mph...but as far as I know...most of the people on this board trap bout 79 with bolt ons...1/8th mile that is

Yes the car was bone stock with no name 17" radials and absolutely no weight reduction. The jack and spare were in the car. I had a helmet, umbrella and towel in the car too. I was running a half of tank of 91 octane Chevron. I shouldve put 93 in, but it was a spur of the moment thing going to the track though. It was 44 degrees at the track and it doesn't usually get that cold around here at this time of year.
I hope this helps,

My launch technique was to rev the car to between 2500 to 3000 rpm and ride the clutch out the hole fairly gradually. I absolutely focused on launching and not cutting a good light. I read some posts from 4th gen 5-speed owners and this is where I got the technique. I deserve no credit for it, the credit belongs to this Forum. Not racing against 10 -12 sec. cars helps too because you really need to hear what the car is doing and these cars are quiet. I was staging shallow also.
My opinion on the 18's is because I have yet to see a car with low profile tires hook up at the track. Just about all the faster cars run tires with tall side walls. Wether they are running slicks, DOT slicks, drag radials or regular radials. This includes FWD drag cars too. My theory is the tall side walls flex and absorb the shock of the launch and help the car get moving. This is especially needed on a manual trans. car. That Honda Accord I raced had 18's on it and I annialated him off the line with only a .943 light on a .500 tree. Lighter is better with wheels but remember that the first 60 feet will make or break you...
Again thanks to all at the ORG,
Gears
P.S. Personally I would like to try some 16" 96 Maxima SE wheels (saw blades) with some 16" drag radials/slicks if the wheel pattern is the same.
"with no name 17" radials"
So not stock tires? Thats pretty much the same technique I use Gears.
"Guys, my stock Altima 3.5 5spd trapped 79mph, you guys should be doing 77-79mph I would think.. My brother's 02 Max 6spd with CAI pulls me on the street."
You are forgetting that times/traps are affected by atmospheric conditions as well as altitude. Your runs may not directly compare to any other persons runs even on the same track on the same day.

gears...the "sawblade" rim you are talking about is the 95-96 SE and 97-99 GLE rim....but they are not 16 inch wheels...they are actually 15s....and from what I learned in the wheel/tire section on this forum....they will not fit a 2k2....you have to run at least 16 inch rims...you can try the 16 inch five star 97-99 SE rims.....but they aren't as light as the 15 inch sawblades (19lbs vs 16lbs)....
anyway that is probably your best bet....finding a cheap used pair of 5 star 97-99 SE wheels....or maybe even the 00-01 SE 16 inch wheels....I think they weigh almost the same as the 5 stars.....but I know one thing is for sure....they all have the same bolt-pattern of 5x114.3...and all of these rims have around the same offset and width....so mounting them won't be a problem
