It's been known to lose power, and it seems logical considering its location configuration. A POP, or stock unit is still best IMO, since you're auto, stock, or hacked airbox would be optimal.

I'm switching over from 3 consecutive Hondas and the Honda forums to the Nissan side. I find this thread interesting since I so far (on max.org) have found many different opinions about which intake route to go. I took out the stock air filter and replaced w/ K&N drop in and was impressed with the outcome. You could actually notice the difference (unlike in any honda). I'm now considering the basic stillen intake with the transition piece and k&n cone that matches up to the Map. But from what I've heard on here, I may be better off leaving the K&n drop in? The stillen would be pulling in more air, but hotter air? Nobody likes upgrades that are noisy and lose HP (slight sarcasm). BTW, the car is a 99 GXE auto. Some input please.....

I had 3 hondas before my Maxs too. Now I've had 3 maximas.

There is some debate over what intake is best. Some people claim they can feel more power on their butt dyno with stock airboxes, modded stock airboxes, etc. Who knows. They are all going to be within a couple HP of eachother. I think it's really splitting hairs to say such and such intake is better than another. Personally I think you'd be just as well off choosing an intake based on price and sound as you would "performance" since they only give you a few HP anyways, unless your intake has a T61 attached to it

I'm beginning to see a trend here. lol. As far as the intake arguement, I think your response is right on. From experience, I know that the unprotected cone filters accumulate dirt & debris much faster than an inbox element. And as such, need to be cleaned and re-oiled often to attain maximum efficiency. Though the cone filters do seem to add a small amount of gas mileage. Thanks for the response.
