My first time ever running a car at the track, how does this sound?

I was wondering how my times sound being this is the first time i have ever run a car at the track. Car is completly stock as far as the engine and exhaust go. i had a little less then 3/4 of a tank of gas, and i left my system in. The only thing i did was take my rims off the front and put my stock 16s on the front.

First run i ran a 4 door volvo sedan he ran a 17.205 @ 82.46 mph
Me:
r/t .585
60' 2.432
330 6.861
1/8 10.477
mph 69.54
990 13.488
1/4 16.214
mph 83.55

My second and last run i ran a turbo charged rx7 who ran a 12.836 @ 107.90 mph.
Me:
r/t .160
60' 2.437
330 6.847
1/8 10.452
mph 69.41
990 13.461
1/4 16.179
mph 85.08

Even if it's an auto it's on the slow side. 85 mph doesn't sound right. Maybe it's just your 60' though.

it may be slow, the car doesnt seem like its running right but the low 16 sounds about right tho, if the r/t was better i would be close to high 15s.

r/t does not affect your time. You could cut a 20 second r/t and still run 16s. The 60 foot, however, has to come down. A 2.2 60 foot might get you in the 15's.

The times don't seem that slow for an AT. Plus, it could be the weight of the gas, wheels (back two, especially) and the system. Stereo systems (especially 2 subs in a quality box) can weigh over 100 lbs. He was probably weighing in at somewhere close to 3500 lbs.

I agree...those times don't sound bad for a bone stock 97 auto....also the fact that hes luggin around extra baggage....also weather coulda played a role in his times...was it 90 degrees when u ran?

I read high 15s being the norm for automatic 4th gens... if he is able to cut a 16.1 with extra baggage and his first time ever racing, then he is not far from the norm....next time, take all that stuff out and get the launch down...u will definitely be hitting 15s

thats the way i see it, i only got two runs in so i didnt get much practice on the launch. also i left the extra weight because i wanted to see how it was as it usually is, i might be going back this week with less weight. as far as the weather it wasnt that hot out, actually it was kinda chilly out when i ran my last run.

Is it possible for a 5th gen auto ( 2k or 2k1 ) with all the bolts on to run in the 14's, or perhaps I should have ask does any 5th gen auto with all bolt on ever hit 14's ? I think that would be a heck of a challenge.

Yes its the knock sensor.

If he cuts down a lot of weight, those rims, system, and gets a few mods it will be running a lot better. Seems like KS might be bad too, or there are some other issues. Mine ran a 15.3 with some issues, and I think its good for a 15.0 or 14.9 with the auto....but we'll never know because that auto is gone forever so it looks like low high 13's will be the next step once all is done.

yeap, the times sound just about right for an overweight bone stock maxima. Loose that extra weight and you'll be in the high 15's with the other stock auto maxima's.

I brought my car into the shop to get the check engine light looked at. besides 3 or 4 o2 sensors, i got a knock sensor code. Does the knock sensor affect the performance alot, or not enough to spend the couple hundred bucks to fix it.???
please help

Where should I start with mods. I already have intake, and cat back exhaust, and a front strut bar. Im looking to improve performance, handling, and braking. Thanks.

knock sensor and its harness (the harness is a culprit too) should be your next as soon as possible maintenance procedure, your car defaults to a 160hp "SAFE" fuel map, very bad for gas mileage/driving

i ran a 15.89 with intake and bad o2 sensor (i have an auto 99 cali spec-the slowest of 4th gen maximas, i ran right after i reset the ecu, no weight reduction, i have all available SE options)

good luck, you have your base run, and you probably learned how the track procedures are (avaiod the water pit unless you have slicks, lining up etc.)
so from now on your times should only be getting better.

Weight Reduction can be your best friend, just ask krismax, hehe
