First time at the track

I just got back from the track not to long ago, I got say it was fun out there. I was the only import there, most of them were mustangs old and new, one truck a couple of bikes.

My first run sucked big time, i had way to much wheel spin and no traction. On my second run I did a bit better, and my third was an improvement.

I still need improve on my reaction, I believe I might be able to hit low 14 maybe even high 13s.

Here are my slips.

Good times, man. I keep forgetting that Lonestar is a 1/4-mile track now since Hennessey bought it.

wow ! this looks nice, love those 3.5's. first time out is always the toughest , go back, and hit it some more, i would say with a good ole 60, you could get close to the 13 second mark ! nice work

Your reaction time does not affect your 1/4 mile time in any way. You could literally sit on the line for 30 seconds, and still run a 14.4 second 1/4 mile time. Your 60' time does however affect your 1/4 mile time, and those definately have room for improvement. You could be looking at 14.1s with a good 60'.

I'm going to go back there again to get more practice and improve my time. I'm going to need to buy some new tires/ wheels just for the track.

I can't skip the water box so I have to do a burnt out to heat my tire up but I don't really want to do that on my street tires.

Anyone have suggestions what tire/wheel combo to get just for the track?

If they are just for the track then you should get some slicks. What wheel you get depends on your budget.

Damn.....I'm not sure if I should say that was good compared to what I run. Cause we are in different states. Cause my first run at the track was 14.9. The fastest time I ran was a 14.5, so I guess its cause we are in different states.

He had a 100 mph trap in there...he could easily see low 14s and maybe even high 13s...yes conditions have much to do with it, but that is a VERY good trap speed for an auto, so with a better launch, he could see much better times than those.

yeah i was thinking the same thing, i was running consisten low 14.3's with a slipping tranny, and only y-pipe and no tune, id say with some practice he should be able to hit 13's.

Soonest I get new racing tire, I will head back out there. On my last 2 runs I took of a bit slowly. I was afraid I was going to spin my tires again and get no traction like my first run.

Anyone have any tips? While I was at the starting line, I had my left foot on the brakes while I had my right foot on the gas holding about 1.5krpms. Soonest the green light came up I took off, when I notice I had traction I floored it.

Damn you, 5th gen guys.

Yeah...you should definitely power brake. Take it higher...closer to 2k. When you're ready to go, let go of the brake, and ease into the pedal more than you are. You don't want to pin it to the ground when you think you have traction. You want to ease, ease, then go! You should be able to yank off a 2.1x easily. Don't worry about new tires or anything like that. You can do it with what you're got. My $0.02. And I pulled 1.98/1.99 60fts in my GTP with Goodyear RSAs, which suck @$$. Good luck, and keep us posted.

yeah, i pulled 2.2x's all day with my stock potenzas...if the 2k method doesnt work, try around 1k, thats where ive found is best, and just ease into the pedal, seems like you get the best times that way (for me at leat)

Just a quick question, I'm gona head back to the drag strip again this weekend. Since I can not avoid the waterbox and have do a burn out.

How can I do a burnout properly? While I was over there, I just had the e-brake up and pressing the accelerator while on D. I spin the tires for a few seconds but not enough to make smoke.

Should I just change gear to 1 or 2? and how long should I keep them spinning?\

thanks,

I spin 'em with the ebreak up and in 1. Since you'll be forced to go in the waterbox, you'll probably be able to spin both front tires, which is a good thing. But use 1st. It'll hold that gear better allowing to heat 'em up real good.

Also when I'm already stage and ready, should I take off at the last yellow light? So by the time I press the accelerator and the car gets moving it should be green then.

If you're bracket racing, yes. If you're just making regular runs (time trials, etc), you could sit at the line all day even after it turns green and the clock will not start until the car moves.

Doing what you said above will improve your R/T (reaction time) but R/T is not an important factor in getting better times. Improving your 60ft time, which is a reflection upon how well you launch your car, is the MOST important thing.
