engine work

Hey all,
I am planning on changing my timing belt because i got this car at 109K and i don't know how long ago it was changed. About how much does it cost for nissan or some other shop to replace it? Also how much do you estimate a plug, plug wires, cap and rotor change would cost?
thanx

Expect the timing belt to be quite expensive. About $200-$500 dollars for someone else to do it for you. The belt itself is only like $15.00. As for cap, rotor, wires, and plugs. Expect to spend about $60 bucks for all those parts. Its easy to do yourself. One thing I want to point out. Make sure that you use NGK Plugs, and wires. I dunno if they make cap and rotors too....someone else may know.

yeah my 88 maxima has 175,000 miles to it and it's gonna need a new timing belt soon. other than that, it's a damn good car. actually all the belts need to be replaced because they're shot. they're all cracked and bare, and when it's cold they squeal and the alternator light fades on. I'm guessing that since the rest of the belts are in that bad of a condition, the timing belt was never done. That's probably why the timing mark jumps on the crankshaft pulley under the timing light? The drivebelts say Nissan on them, so most likely they're the factory belts from 15 years ago. an estimate I got was $500 to install a new timing belt, drivebelts, water pump, and crankshaft seals. does that sound like it's a good deal, or am I getting ripped off here? either way, that's the only thing my car needs, mechanically, and it'll run damn near forever.

$500 sounds like an alright deal, though you could probably get it cheaper. I paid $200 for the timing belt and tensioner replacement from a local mechanic. I would imagine I would have been able to get the water pump, seals, and other belts replaced for under $400. Don't ever take it to the Nissan dealership though, they said it would be $1300 or some sh*t like that. They were going to charge me for over 15 hours of labor, they were adding labor charges for each individual item. Hell, they wanted $350 just to replace the timing belt alone.

I'd get that timing belt and tensioner replaced immediately though. If either one breaks, your pistons are going to smash your valves and it'll cost you a fortune to fix, upwards of $1500. I doubt that your still running the stock drive belts, but hey, anything's possible.
