1988 Maxima wagon has intermittent thumping when hitting bunps from driver side rear. Thumps a lot then won't for a while. Anyone had this happen and fix it? Sounds liek a strut mount to me but visual inspection of strut mount from inside doesn't show any problems. No obvious problem from outside either. there is 160K on car and rear struts were replaced by prev own at 115K. still seem v good on bounce test

I'd take a look at your swaybar, all the bushings and what not. Also check the tire balance and alignment.

I agree...Also, double check the torque on the rear strut and sway bar. Also, check for play in the wheel bearings...if they are worn or loose enough, then can thump like that, also...
