86 Maxima Engine Mods
86 Maxima Engine Mods
Hello One and All!
Newbie here to the list...
Just picked up a littel 86 Maxima Wagon here last Sept
for a work vehicle and now I'm interested it modifying
a little.
I was told that two gears relating to the timing belt
can be swapped to give the V6 engine a little more low
end power...
Anyone done this before?
Thanks!
Scott

I've been on here for a while and I've never heard of such a thing.
I would strongly recommend against doing that, that could mess up the timing of your car and you could end up destroying your valves and damaging your pistons.
What you can do is advance the timing. 24 degrees seems to be as far as you can go, and you'll have to run high octane gas in order to keep the car from detonating, which will also damage your engine. So make sure you fill up with some 91 before you do that.

Thanks for the reply C
I was told about this mod from a parts guy at the
local Nissan dealer... he said that a couple of
mechanics that used to work there did this all the
time...
I'm trying to find out more information...
I was told that the Maxima has the same engine as
the Z car of it's day, only detuned...
I'm wondering if this is how they detuned it.
I'll let you know if I find out anything more.
Thanks!

Scott,
The only "de-tuning" that Nissan performed on our cars over the Z31 lies in the intake, exhaust, and A/R ratio curves in the computer, as well as possibly a speed limiter with a higher top speed set. Mechanically, both engines are identical.

Are they the polyurathane kind or the polygraphite kind?
Where did you buy them from?
Thanks!

I called the parts guy again that told me about this mod.
Turns out that it can only be done on third and up gens,
it can't be done on a second gen.
Oh well... there's plenty other mods!
Thanks!

What needs to be done to swap in the Z car's computer?
Is it just "plug and play"?
Thanks!
