88 Maxima SE vs. 89 Olds Cutlass Supreme SL - Part 2
yep, I got a countryboy redneck friend who has a 1989 Olds Cutlass Supreme SL who insists it'll take my Maxima. Personally I think my Maxima can nail him against the wall. I'm just curious as to what everyone else's opinion is. I want to race but I need to wait until my new clutch is broken in - WELL broken in.
Here's what we're comparing:
1989 OLDS CUTLASS SUPREME SL
1988 NISSAN MAXIMA SE
Olds: 3.1L fuel-injected, V6
Max: 3.0L fuel-injected, V6
Olds: 3-speed automatic transmission with overdrive
Max: 5-speed manual transmission
both are pretty much stock.
I don't know the horsepower specs of these cars but I think that I can kill him, however I have to shift and clutch while all he has to do is hit the gas and go. that's the only problem I foresee. normally I don't take 1st that high, well I can't really, then once I go to second I can kill anything, and by third, they're usually in my dust. but then again, I'm used to racing these little toy cars, hondas and toyotas and acuras with 4-cylinders.
just wanted everyone else's opinion as to who has this race.

As long as you can shift that mother properly, you're going to destroy him. That Olds 3.1 only puts out 140 HP, so you already have 20 HP over him. And a manual transmission gives you a definite advantage over the automatic. Just make sure your car is tuned up and running good and you shouldn't have any trouble. I'd do a few time trials beforehand to make sure your car is running good. At least time your 0-60, you should be able to hit mid 8's. If you have a drag strip nearby, do a 1/4 mile run as well.

What C said. You should dust him. Not only do you have the HP advantage, you have less weight to pull also. Honsetly, I wouldn't try running my 3.4 Olds against my 1st gen L28 5spd. The twin dual cam Olds has more oughtright HP, but the Max has the advantage in power to weight distribution.
