Help info onTRANS
Morn guys. This is my first post, so please bair with me.
I have a 1988 Maxima V6= 30000.I just got this car and love it.But i had only put 60 are so miles on it with the TRANS mess up.
Here is what the Trans did and does.Well for the 60 miles are so the TRANS work perfect. Change gears ,down shifted and every thing was prefect, not one bit of slip at all.But when i was coming from town and went to turn in a road near my house,it tried to down shift and miss it ,then nothing at all.Like the Trans was gone slam out no gears at all.
But after the car sits for 10 min are so, it will pull off and after itsits over nite the Trans acts like nothing is wrong until it seams to get Hot are some thing, then it will do this all over again.
Guys i am just a poor guy i need this car bad.But i just can not pay for a Trans to be put in right now.Is this TRANS SHOT are is there and thing i can do to fix it up yall think? Without a compleat Rebuild are instaling another Trans ??
PS:Auto Trans with push button Over Dirve button on shifter.

How many miles are on your vehicle?
These automatic transmissions are notoriously weak. Mine is occasionally erratic, especially in the winter when it sticks in first gear for the first two minutes. I've got 127K on my car and I figure the transmission will probably hold out for another 50K.
As for your case, it may be that your transmission is overfilled with fluid. When the transmission warms up, it causes the fluid in there to expand. I'm not entirely sure, but that may contribute to it refusing to downshift.
Whatever you do though, don't flush the system, that will certainly destroy it. Some people don't even recommend a complete drain. What I would do is check the fluid level per the Chiltons/Haynes/FSM recommendation. I believe you have to check it when it's warm and there's some other stuff you have to do like shifting through all of the gears. If it's overfilled, drain some of it out and maybe that'll cure the problem. If for some reason it's underfilled, then add some but be careful not to add too much. There's nothing else you can do to service this tranny other than correcting the fluid level. The filter is non-serviceable and there's no way you could tear the transmission apart and fix it yourself, it's unquestionably the most complicated piece of machinery on the car and takes advanced skill to repair.
If it does need to be rebuilt, expect to pay around $1500. I wouldn't buy a used transmission unless it's got exceptionally low miles. It would probably cost around $750 for the used transmission and the install.

Oh and one more thing. If you do have to replace the transmission, make sure you replace the torque converter as well. If the transmission is bad, chances are it's putting bits of metal and other debris into the torque converter. If you don't replace it, it will put that garbage into your newly rebuilt transmission and destroy it.

Thanks Charles Bisel. The Trans is a little over full with fluid,[maybe 3/4 to 1"] past the full mark.I will drain that out tomorrow until the correct level on the stick.Sorry , but i do not know the shifting threw the gears before i check the fluid level[your way].I have always check my other cars just while warm up either in Park or Neutral.Do you know the correct way to do this Trans for this car?
Sorry i just don't know the mileage on the car.But if i had to guess ,i would say alot
This Motor in the car runs so good,it was hard to believe.Thats why i Paid my hard earn Dollars for it.Every thing seam so good.I was shock to say the least when the Trans done what it did. Thanks for any info you are any one cares to share.

The transmissions above are front wheel drive 4 speed automatic transmissions. They are throttle pressure controlled. Common symptoms are transmission shifting erratic, slipping or not shifting at all. Also the check engine light can come on.
The throttle pressure cable adjustment should be checked fist, before any major repairs.

Anyone know about this above?I found this this info while surfing around the net looking for maybe a answer. If so? Can this be done via me?If so, HOW?? Are does it have to go some where to have it adjusted. The site that had this did not offer any more info, as how to make the adjustment. thanks guys

Larry,
The adjustment cable is on the accelerator/throttle housing on top of the engine. it is found down to the right of the accelerator housing. It has two nuts that sandwich the adjuster. Loosen both nuts and open the throttle wheel to the right by pulling it up. Push back on the sleeve lining that runs between the two nuts until it cant go back any further. tighten the nut on the left up against the mechanism and then back it off 3/4 of a turn. Then tighten the nut on the nut on the right and you should be all set.

Not quite sure what's meant by the "sleeve lining"???
I've tried the adjustment but the whole casing wants to
move... not sure that I'm doing it right, but don't see
any other way...
Thanks!
