ok, crutchfield says that 5 1/4 are a direct fit in the back...and they say that 6 3/4 are suposed to go in the door but they do not have one that will fit in the Max...but they do say that they have one Kenwood DFC 1668S will fit but its a 6 1/2....anyone have any insight on if this is correct and if you have any experience with replacing these. Thanks.

My wagon already had the door speakers replaced before I bought
the car (didn't know it, but they sound WAY to good to be the
factory speakers), so I can't help ya there, but Crutchfield sends
out detailed instructions and wire harnesses.

My wagon accepts 6 1/2" in the doors and 6 1/2" in the rear roof.

I will be replacing the rears here very shortly, but that's pretty easy.

Well the fronts can easily fit 6.5 in speakers, you may have to drill new holes, and if it's a 2 or 3 way speaker, you may need to grind the inside of the speaker grill down so they will clear. As for the rears, if you want to keep the existing housing, you can actually put 4" speakers in the back. 5.25" speakers will need to have a bracket made for them to fit. You can drop 6.5" speakers in the back, but you will need to remove the rear seat to get em in. Also you may need to recarpet the parcel shelf because there will be a hole left on each side where the stock tweeter goes.

Can you replace the stock tweeter too along with the 4" and just keep the factory housing....I just dont want to have a gap back there, and i finally have the car, and on the ride home lastnight I realized that every speaker on the car is blown

Well if you just replace the 4" speaker with lets say a 2 - way speaker, you'll still use the old housing. You can leave the old tweeter there and the whole unit will cover the hole. But you should be able to replace the tweeter if your planning on using components in the back. You may have to do a little modifying to mount the tweeter however.

so in the back there are two speakers in the inclosure? there is a 4" and a tweeter next to it? and if there are two can you replace both speakers back there or just the 4"? And will any 4" work? I am looking to buy some today.

You can replace the 2 of them if you want, probably be easiest to replace just the 4" with a 2-way and just disconnect and leave the stock tweeter there.

They should work, worst case scenario is you whip out the dremel to enlarge the opening in the stock housing, or you drill new holes for the doors. Nothing major. :P

lol, my sound system cost more than my tranny swap! (which wasn't very expensive either since I was already a 5-speed!)

I'll keep everyone posted on how the stereo comes out in my second gen...so far I have a kenwood KDC 122 deck...and two sets of pyramid three-way speakers...for a grand total of $130 (thats with shipping on the speakers anyway it will have to be a little bit better considering I will now be able to listen to cd's and I will be replacing four blown speakers.

Hey what'd you do with the stock graphic equalizer after you put in the Kenwood? Did you leave it in? How'd you cover the hole?

I ended up leaving mine in. You could get something from crutchfield if you wanted to remove your eq and clock.

So it's just there obsolete or is it compatible with the new receiver?

It's pretty much obsolete. Not going to see much use from it.

I replaced the stereo in my 85 wagon, i filled the hole where the EQ and clock were with a peice of plexiglass painted black on the back side, then i used epoxy to glue it onto the back of the console face.

Well I have not actually put the deck in yet....its a 'x-mas present' so I can have it until christmas....but I got it from crutchfield and they give you the bracket that will fill the lower section where the eq is, when you buy a deck from them....I am just going to pull the eq out and fill it in with the stuff I got from crutchfiled.

How them 6.25" work for you in the front panels? Any problems getting them in? Same with the 4", were you able to just drop 'em in place of the stock woofers?

4"s just went right in...no problem there...on the other hand I dont have the 6.5's in yet because I need to go get some self taping screws...I am hoping to get them put in tonight....I could not get the stock screws to work with the stock holes and the aftermarket speakers...I will let you know how it goes...I should have them in by tomorrow

I got mine in alright, but I need to dynomat the door because on certain frequency's (mostly low mids since I have a hpf on this channel) I get rattling from the door panel. It doesn't help I'm missing a few of the panel clips though.

Alright Ty....It was cold as crap but I fianlly got them in..it took about an hour or so to get the doors on and off and put the speakers in....they fit in pretty nice...they push the door pannel out a little bit but all of my door clips went in...the self taping screws worked great....def get those they save a lot of time, and they are great...just get the nut driver or screwdriver point to fit them then let it rip on the drill...I am happy with the sound that I am getting, and it will be even better when I replace the deck with my kenwood (santa is bringing that)....I mean I only put $30 bux in the speakers and they sound a lot better than the stock ones....not going to win a competition, but I am not trying to sink that much money in the second gen....anyway hope the info helps and good luck with yours

Sweet! Congrats! I'm glad that worked out. I'm thinking that I'm probably gonna go the same way you did with the front speakers. Like you said, just want better sound, not trying to blow anyone out. I mean this is my first car of mine own (grew up in NYC so I ain't really need one) and I'm just trying to bring it up to speed. One thing I'm concerned with is the rears....I listen to my music with a considerable amount of bass and I'm wondering how coaxials are gonna handle it. I mean don't get it twisted, I'm not trying to cause quakes so the woofer box would be a little excessive for what I'm trying to do, but I do want to be able to here that thump!

well if you want thump then you are going to need to go with something bigger than a four in the back...or else drop a little sub in the trunk. You would have to do something custom in order to get a bigger speaker to fit on the back deck...I listen to everything from country to hip hop, and personally I dont think the set up I have right now is made for hip hop....I mean maybe it will sound a little better once I put my new deck in and I am pushing a little more power...we will see...goodluck with yours

think that might work?

sure you can make anything work...you would have to do some custom work to make that fit in the rear deck and still look alright...also I did not think you were trying to spend that much money....you can t run the components with out an amp....amp=more money...but amp also=much better sound...its all up to you, that would need some custom work to make it fit properly back there, but if you do it right then in the end you would get more thump from that as opposed to the set up I have

Word...I see what you mean. I completely forgot that I was gonna have to run an amp. That changes things a bit. I guess running coaxials in the back should be ok for now and I can always add a small sub when the time comes around.

Do you have the voice alert system on your car? I've read that some folks lost that once they installed a new head unit....you figure a solution for that?

THe car does not have voice alert now...at least not to my knowledge...I dont know if it ever did...but I would probably un-hook it anyway because I would get tired of it telling me something was wrong with my car ...on the other note, I would just go with two way or three way in the back...then if you want just get some cheap sub....really no small interior speaker can compete with the bass of just one sub and a peice of crap amp

I hear ya! Even the sweetest voice'll start to grate you when it's constantly telling you your door is ajar!

But ya make sense about the woofer. I think just changing the speakers and saving for a suba and amp is the way to go.

The voice system comes through the left door speaker, but as long as you use the existing wiring to the speaker it will still work. BTW, if you want to disconnect the voice, the box is in the center console under the storage bin that sits under the ashtray. That bin snaps in, you can gently pry it out and snap it back in.

First thought that comes to mind would be to put some foam pieces between the door itself and the door panel. That would probably kill the vibrations.
