the transmissions are the only major problem. you can help solve this by putting in a shift kit. that will help make the gears change better and faster therefore eliminating the slow shifts whicj loose power and make things in tranny slip and built heat which will not make it last as long.

Good

Let me put it this way: Mine has 250,000 miles and it runs good. I am going to see it for the first time tomorrow when my brother brings it up for the day.

VERY GOOD...

Yes, these cars are very reliable...I purchased mine, an 87 gxe WAGON, from an individual in NC 2 years ago. I was intentionally looking for a Max due to reliability and performance...at the time, it was going to be my only vehicle, with a wife, and a 4 month old child. In addition, we traveled to NY a lot, to visit my wife's family. When I bought the car, it had 198k on it. Not only has it made several trips from NC to NY, but also made the 3700 mile drive from NC to TX when we moved here. All of this without complaint. The only issue I've encountered is, at 215k, the thrust washer on the distributor gave out, and I had to replace it. Since buying the car, I've been nothing but impressed by the car's performance and style - I know that wagons are frowned upon, but in my opinion, the max wagon is by far the best looking wagon on the road...and one of the best performing cars for the power / weight ratio, with the venerable vg30e v6 powering it. In short, I love the car, and would never part with it. In fact, I want to add to my list by acquiring a good, used 86-88 se sedan...w/ 5sp...
