Questions on my 86 Max: Help?

Alright, I'm basically a newb when it comes to my 86 Max (Automatic, 3.0 V6), and well most cars in general. I have a few questions, and I'd appreciate it if you guys could help me.

1) I recently got a Pioneer CD Player from a buddy, basically for free. Nothing fancy, and it works just fine. I have the stock radio in and everything, no mods at all. I can't find an in-dash installation kit for my car, and I've been told they don't make them for an '86 Maxima. How can I mount my CD Player in the radio slot then? The CD player measures 7 1/2" inches long, 2 inches high. Also, the guy at my local audio store said I needed a wiring harness(which I figured), but he also said if I had an amplifier, the whole system might have to be rewired. Is that true? Also, is there any other mods I would need to get my CD player running?

2) I have power windows, and on the main control on the drivers side I have a button missing. It's the driver's side front window, and the motor works and everything with the lil tab that moves, I'm just missing the large black button that makes it easy to move that tab. Is there some place I can get a new one? Either online or a general store that might be in town.

3) My steering wheel has some excessive play or looseness when you turn the steering wheel right. My Haynes repair manual says it could be a couple of these things:

1) Wheel bearings worn
2) Tie-rod end loose
3) Rack and pinion loose
4) Worn or loose steering intermediate shaft

Can anyone give me an estimate on how much any of those things would cost to fix at a local garage?

Thanks again guys!!

Sorry, I can't help you on any of these but I am also in need of the big black button that controls the driver's window. A piece of the plastic broke so the window goes down ok but I have to fiddle with it to get it to go up. I went to the Nissan dealer and they said I'd have to buy the whole switch - I think it was a few hundred dollars. I think I'll keep fiddling unless someone knows where to get one.

Good luck on your questions.

1) For installing the radio, you will need to make your own brackets. Crutchfield should have a custom face deal can cover the gaps in the dash for the new head unit. They should also have wire harnesses as well.

2) The plastic switch has been know to break off easy. Your best bet is to find a new control unit in a junkyard. All you have to do is pry it out, and disconnect the harness to remove it.

3) I would examine each of the things mentioned, as it can be any of those that can cause your issue.

I checked on the window switch from a dealer that I found on this site and has been really helpful and has good prices for a nissan dealer. He confirmed that you can't just buy the cheap black plastic toggle button that sits on the switch. A new switch from Nissan (through Nissan-auto-parts-dealer.com) was $225. I'm just going to keep looking...

Thanks guys, that helps a lot!

One last question though, to keith_u or maximase86, is all I need to install the CD player the mounting plates, wiring harness, and antennae adaptor? And can anyone answer my rewiring question that I asked in the first post?

the rewiring he was talking about is for the (I think) 88 and newer maxima with the Bose radio system.your however should have a clarion unit in it and the amp is built into the EQ.Just one thing if you do it yourself take your time removing the plastic around the radio I am unsure how alike the inside of an 86 is to an 87 but in the 87 it comes off in one big piece and there are alot of wires and switches to contend with.

If you got the wiring harness, you shouldn't really need to rewire your system. You may however need to spice into existing wires....but I believe the Crutchfield harness makes that unneccessary.
