Fuel Temp sensor replacement?

Has anyone ever replaced there fuel temp sensor with out replacing the FPR? I am wondering because this would be much easier than replacing my whole FPR. If you have done this did you have any problems with leaking gas aftwards? Any comments? Thanks.

I don't think you can. From the last time I looked, the sensor was integrated into the FPR.

thats what I am trying to find out. Just by looking at it, it appears that you can just unscrew the Fuel temp sensor...but maybe that is just the way it looks and not the way it works....

...anyone ever tried this?

well I believe you can unscrew the fuel temp sensor from the FIPR but any place I've called can't get it, or even look it up. you might be able to ****** one from a junkyard for fairly cheap. and I believe a new FIPR ran about $90 at auto zone 2 years ago. the spade terminal was corroded off on mine but I just left it as-is without any problems, even though the computer kept throwin a code.

does anyone know for sure if you can do this?

*yeah I am throwing the code and I also have idle problems when the car is warm....that is one symptom of the fuel temp sensor not working....just giving it a shot really.

Did you check sensor continuity?

20C (68F) 2.3K < R < 2.7K
50C (122F) 0.77K < R < 0.87K
80C (176F) 0.3K < R < 0.33K

Does the problem go away when outside air temperature < 60 F ?

The '88 Z factory service manual indicates that you can replace the sensor.
Try to "dremel" out around the broken off spade lug, if the resistance checks out just solder a new connector in place.

I already tried soldering it....it is compleately snapped off, no stub or anything. The solder was not holding it, thats why I am going this route.

I gotta replace my FPR soon too. Sometimes before the car is warmed up, raw gas seeps out of it (hmm I wonder if it's broken....). At Pep's, the Borg Warner unit we sell is 80-something dollars.

even so you cant get the sensor (from nissan) without the FPR. 90$ is a lot but hey you've spent so much already...

so does anyone know if it is safe to replace the Fuel temp sensor without replacing the FPR? My FPR is fine and does not leak so I would rather not go thru that hassle if I do not have to. Does anyone have experience with this?

yes, you can replace just the sensor, it just screws out and no fuel leaks out. I changed mine out, but still had issues, and eventually replaced the whole regulator. And, actually I still have some starting issues, lol, but I know I need a tune up. good luck!

Cool...thanks for the info. What issues did you still have? Were they related to you changing the fuel temp sensor or were you just trying to only do that to avoid changing the FPR (possibly the root of the problem?)? Thanks for any info, I will be doing this at the beginning of next week.

-also did you check codes after you changed just the sensor? Were you still throwing the fuel temp sensor code?

Well before I pulled the ecu for codes, I was having cold starting problems, it would take a while to start then run really bad until it fully warmed up. Then I pulled the codes and got the fuel temp code, so I changed it, but still had the problem, Then I replaced the whole regulator. For the most part cold start problem has gone away, but every so often, it will be hard to start, but like I said I know my car needs a major tune - plugs, cap, rotor, wires, fuel filter, etc. And no I haven't checked the ecu for codes again, but I really should.

ok, I am hoping the fuel temp sensor fixes my hot start problems...I am not having problems with cold starts. The FSM does say that one symptom of a Fuel temp sensor failing (mine is broken off so I guess that counts a failing) is having a rough idle when the car is warm...so hopefully that is it.

Why is it so difficult to change the FPR, or are you just trying to avoid any unnecessary work/expense?

I don't think it will be that hard....I just don't want to open the fuel rail if I do not have to....also the two mounting bolts the FPR apear to be at $itch to get to.
