1st gen. survivor in New England

Hi guys. I'll do a quick intro. if it's okay.

My name is Silvester but I go by Sixty8Panther on all forums.
I recently joined the NissanClub forums but got a very nasty
reception. I'm just looking for a fun forum to chat with cool
car guys about my obsession with Datsun/Nissan/Infiniti
products. Especially my 1984 810 Maxima. Some of you may
desipise me right off the bat because I'm a GM fanatic 1st &
foremost but I do also love a small select group of Japanese
cars. I think Nissan/Inifiniti makes the coolest cars our of
any Japanese manufacturer and Datsuns are the only "real"
Classic cars ever to come out of Japan.

Well... perhaps some rotary powered pre-Ford Mazdas & a
few RWD Toyotas as well.

Anyway I'm not a jerk and I'd like to start off making some
friends. For those of you still reading this I'll tell you about
my Maxima. It's a 1984 "Datsun Nissan Maxima" according
to my trunklid. I insited at the registry that it be titled as a
DATSUN and not a Nissan. I love telling people I own a
Datusn because of the deer in headlights looks you get.

Here's a few pics of my Datsun. I've got like 40 cool photos
of the car and all kinds of otehr fun stuf like dragway time
slips, original window sticker & even some vintage ads,
Haynes Manual & Build Sheets. If you guys want I'll post
some of this stuff but I don't want to be accused of being
"all about me" like on the last forum.

I love thie site & esp. all the info & photos of other 1st gen
Maximas. I'm actively lookign for a parts car 1st gen so
please keep me in mind if you have anything at all from a
810 Maxima.

Nice Maxima my friend. Those of us that love these cars are few and far between. I know what you mean about the "deer in the headlights" when you tell people you not only drive, but LOVE your Datsun.

Anyone I talk to about my car looks at me the same way. Usually its a "isn't it time to upgrade your vehicle" type of comment. My response is usually something to the effect of "if you had put as much work into your car as I have in mine, you might think differently." Dropping a car off at the dealership does not constitute a loving relationship.

I'd love to see anything you've got about your car. ORIGINAL BUILD SHEET?!?!?!? WINDOW STICKER?!?!?! I've gotta see that.

How long have you had yours? Mine has been in the family since '86 and I drive it everyday and wouldn't have it any other way!

I wish you could have bought the 84 I had for sale. Really nice car, very rust free, with a little work it would have made a great driver. Unfortunately, unforseen circumstances, lack of room and the fact I am moving contributed to me having to let it go. To a 17 year old nonetheless. I expect to see it in the JY in a year or 2.

I am also currently looking for a diesel model to add to the collection. I've got my eye on a clean 2 owner in CA, but need to find another job first...

Anyway, welcome to the club! Glad to have another 1st gen owner around!

Yes indeed I think I will be enjoying my stay here.
Thanks for the warm welcome 83. Great minds think
alike I guess.

I wish I had the original build sheet, that I don't have
but I do have every single piece of paperwork the car
left the dealership with and I even tracked down the
original owner. What I do have is a "parts list" break
down, the style they use in a bodyshop when they're
appraising an accident claim. Sorry about the
confusion.

Here's the Window Sticker.

And for those who care here's some other photos of my
car off of 910Bluebird.com.

Nice '84!!!!!!!

Hi Sylvester, Nice pics', and a great pis of the window sticker!
Mine is an '84 "DATSUN" 910 wagon, 173,000 original miles, everything works, including the tape deck! I love it, and it still gets over 20mpg city with the air off! Earl

Nice sticker! Factory MT - nice!

I had to swap mine in from an 84 - best mod I have ever done.

Carp: 20 mpg! I can only get 17.5 mixed city/hwy with the MT and driving conservatively.

Thanks guys. Glad to be able to connect with fellow
Maxima fans. I think the Maxima has always been a
great sporty four door car. What sets it appart from
other sedans that only pretend to be "fun to drive"
is that it's available with a true manual trans. I
strongly prefer the 1st gens because I'm a RWD
fanatic but I had a ton of fun driving the 2003
6-speed we had at Chevy of Lowell a few years
ago. It was a cool ride.

For the record I've got a leadfoot and do about
70% of my driving on the highway and get between
21 & 23 MPG. Including warming it up in the winter
and jump starting my other beaters with it, 1/4
rasing at New England Dragway and even using it
as the occasional tow vehicle for my buddies cars.

Some more photos of my 1st gen.

Rear end post-new gasket.

Closed course, professional driver.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y26...MaximumMPH.jpg

So the other day while at a junkyard I notice a mid 70s Datsun pickup sitting there, sinking into the mud slowly but surely. And I noticed the old school obnoxious Datsun emblem was still attached to the frail plastic grille.

Well, I've been waiting to find a big Datsun emblem so I could replace the NISSAN badge on the grill of the Maxima so this was the day. Check out the results below.

I said I'd post the pictures of the custom cut vinyl decals I affixed to the Datsun. Here they are... Clockwise from top left:

Just below the passanger side headlight, driver's side fender & trunklid.

Just wait till I turbocharge this little tin can... I can already hear the blow off valve going Swoosh!

Vroooomm-SWHOOSH - tires chirping - repeat.

I'd love a wagon but don;t they hava solid axles instead of IRS?

I know that was the case for the old 510s.

Dude, nice jobs with the pics. The car looks wicked bad! Is it all platinum grey? Mine is platinum grey over fox silver. I have always thought that if I was going to do a repaint, I would shoot the whole car in platinum grey metallic.

Nice job with the emblem. I snagged one from the JY and it is just sitting around. I din't think it'd fit on my grille. I may have to copy that!

Nice 8-ball!

On the subject of turbocharging, what were you thinking about? I've got a 280zx turbo exhaust manifold, and know where to get a 300zx turbo for pretty cheap. I know that the exhaust would need to be modified, could probably loose the muffler but would need to keep the cat for emissions purposes. I am concerned about getting more fuel to the engine with the stock fuel management system. The turbo 280zx also has the BOV on the intake manifold. I wonder if that would need to be there, and how the fuel management system would need to be swapped out / modified.

I had thought about an L28et conversion, later decided on an L28 conversion and now have two engines, but am intrigued by turbocharging - especially when the mechanicals can be bolted on.

What are your thoughts on this?

It has been done already. Car and Driver did it for an issue back in the 80s. I can't recall the Month though. I know Paul Newman was mentioned in the article

Nope. I'm looking for another one right now, and just don't feel it for the wagons. They are a lot better utility vehicle than the sedans, but just don't look right. I found an 81 in the JY this past weekend and looking at it, I just couldn't come to grips with the styling.

Wow! I love it. Where did you find that one? Either it has been
remarkably well preserved or it was repainted casue it looks
great. Badges & emblems on 70s & 80s Japanese cars seem to
be made of paper-mache... they usually just crumble up or just
break when you try to remove them in junkyards. Well... here
in New England anyway, maybe it's another on of those severe
climate related things. Blistering hot summers & Yukon Winters
have a way of destroying anything man made.

Thanks for sharing, this made my day!

BTW: check out this thread, there's some videos of my little 84.

That's true. The wagons are nice cars though. I also like the 83 and 84 sedans with the digital instrument package. There was on E-bay last year in Arizona, not sure if it is still available.

Couple of photos from my recent roadtrip through Western Mass
and into upstate N.Y. It was a loyt of fun but cold & it rained
like in some story from the Bible.

Famous Gift Shop on the Mohawk Trail.

Some random farm in the montains. This guy
had two 1967 Chevelle Malibus & a smashed
& wrecked 1964 Plymouth Barracuda in his
back yard/field.

If it was not for the Fog as thick as whip cream you could
see Mass, VT & NY from this overlook. Which is why they
call it a three state view.

They're not kidding.

Low 20s. If I drive semi-conservatively it's like 24MPG but
usually it's less than that. I could probably very close to
30 if I never warmed it up, jumpstarted people's cars with
it and avoided 6800rpm at every stop light.

Hey Videoman. Lol, I'm still looking for one. The sad fact was that last year, there were a few for sale. The first was a nice blue sedan, in North Carolina, which sold to a person who was/is a member of this forum. The second was a nice wagon in Florida, which was on E-bay. If I would have bid one dollar I would have won it, though it would have had to be shipped. The third was another wagon in Florida, blue that also sold, then there was a really nice sedan that had less than 100,000 miles. It was an 83 from Virginia, that also sold. Then there were 2 wagons in California, both for sale, because their owners died. One belonged to a deceased father, the other, with only 90,000 miles belonged to a deceased Grandmother. I probably won't ever find a nice 1st generation wagon (which is what I'm looking for). I did find a nice 84 Cressida wagon, Brown, in Chicago, Il, But again, by the time I was ready to make my move, it was gone. Oh well:}

Nice photos, and congrats on the shape of that '84. It's great to see the 1st gen love! If I had the money I would be looking for a 1st gen in addition to my 4th gen. In my opinion, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gen are all far above the 5th and 6th gens in terms of aesthetics and all-around coolness.

We need one of these for Datsun --->

That is one nice, clean Maxima without a doubt. I like the factory color of it and it's still in great shape. My car is the same color, but has more rust unfortunately. I also like the Datsun license plate on the front. Great addition there.

Read farther into the thread. Like a few pages in. Key note is that when someone mentions 68 we are talking about him. I lurk on .ORG and I have two .ORG stickers on my car. So I am a vet compared to you.

Everyone please judge for yourself after reading the full thread from the link I posted above.

There are nearly 49,000 members on Nissanclub.com and 63,000 member on Maxima.org. So don't even try to trash Nissanclub.com's site. Cause we will follow you to the ends of the earth.

Geezus... let's not get this same negative B.S. going on
this site. I joined this forum so I could share ideas &
converse with fellow 1st gen. owners. I'm not into the
politics & petty squables of Nissanclub.com or any other
forum. Life is too short to deal with this kind of childish
behavior. I do not join forums for hazing & mind-games.

Cause we will follow you to the ends of the earth.
I guess so... I don't have that kind of time but it seems
as if you guys are BIG BROTHER. Perhaps it was my
fault for ever mentioning Nissanclub.com but I just
wanted to feel out the site and see if the same kind of
hazing & intolerance was prevalent here. So far
everyone has been perfectly polite and easy going. The
only negative experience I've had on Maxima.org is with
a member of Nissanclub.com. Bizzare.
