81 Maxima at a car show

I stumbled on these photos from the Japanese Classic Car Show in Long Beach, California last month. We were represented well with this nice '81/82 Maxima. Our 1st Gen cars are starting to get some old-skool respect.

edit: woah strange....81max i'm pretty sure (not positive) your car has a 2.8L L28E engine not a 2.4 like you have in your car domain.
and also something kinda odd, i clicked on the guy that signed your guest book, xxbart69, lives in the same town as i live in. you should see if he still needs help with his car, come to think of it i havent seen that 1st gen arround in some time.

Niku...you are wrong. The L28E was not an option in the 1st gens. You either got a L24E or a L28D.

mine says L24e on the plate

Does anybody know of the z wheels have the same bolt seperation as the OEM 1st gen wheels. Also, do fatter tires rub or not? Im considering getting a beater set of wheels to mount some studded snow tires on

Tire size

I don't know anything about the wheels, but i am running P215/60R14 on all four of my stock wheels. They look so much better than the tires that are OEM to the Max. I have also been thinking about snow tires this winter. But I have said that for the past 9 winters and never really needed it. I have the spare wheels (they fit and they look like fancy alloy '84 Ford Tempo wheels, but I am not sure) The rwd makes it a slop-fest in the winter but I have yet to get completely stuck.....though it has been tricky a few times each winter.

Don't forget that when you expose these 1st gen Max's to road salt, they turn into rusty hogs real fast. They don't just start rusting in a spot or two, they rust EVERYWHERE! So if you plan to keep your 1st gen Max a long time, try not to drive it when the salt is flying.

Oh trust me, I know about the slop fest in the snow and ice. I actually got stuck at the bottom of my driveway last winter

Do you think they really are ford tempo wheels? I might pick up a steel wheel set.

And I sure as hell know about the rust, over here in buffalo, ny, salting is intensely overdone, I just take the car to the self serve wash alot. Shes a daily driver/mileage master for me, with 1 repaint already, and another one prolly coming around in a few years.

Did you stick the 215's on the stock wheels? IIRC, the stock tire is 180, are you getting rubbing?

tires

I can not be sure if my snow tire wheels are off a Tempo, or where they came from. The previous owner said the wheels came from a Ford dealer friend. As for the 215 tires, they have been on the car for 8 years (2 sets) and I have never heard any rubbing. They are on the stock wheels. They look perfect on the car.

i dont know if you saw my last post but 4 lug Z wheels will fit, the offset is going to be different so they may stick out a little or they may rub but they may just be fine too.

i was going to swap my z wheels to 2nd gen because the tires on the 2nd gen and almost new and theyre grippier but i have a bad wheel on the 2nd gen so i am kinda indecisive as of now

The wheels on his Maxima are '82-83 ZX "swastika" wheels, and yes, any 4-bolt Z wheel will work on any 4-bolt Maxima. This includes 84-86 300ZX 4-bolt wheels. You may have to use spacers though...

The swastika wheels have the wrong offset.

The Z31 4 lug or 240sx bolt straight on.

I'm running 215/50-15s on my first generation.

The Z31 4 lug wheels bolt straight on but the stock Z31 tire size of 215/60-15 is tall enough to rub the rear inner fender liners and the front fender trims at full compression while turning.

You can see the 60 series are a bit too tall on this car that has been through 3 100mph plus hurricanes in the last 5 years and is 30k miles into a turbo being slapped on it at 225k miles.

I went to 215/50 which might seem too short but it works well and looks good though it seems 225/50s would have still fit in the fenders.

I'll try for some pics of it with the current 215/50s on it.

Believe me.........if the swastika wheels would have worked, I woudl have used them rather than give them away along with some 15X7 american racing mesh wheels.......since I no longer own any car that can use that offset.

In regards to the original post and aside from wheel talk. WOW thats what a 1st gen looks like!? I've seen plenty of 2nd gens but never a 1st. It is pretty clean and hope to see some more around.

zcarmaniac, you need to have an account with a picture host like photobucket.com or something like that upload your picture there and just post the link here.
