Learn me on an '83 wagon...

there's one fairly local for sale cheap. Don't have much details on it yet, but figured it is worth a look.

What can you experts tell me about the '83, especially regarding drivetrain, engine/carbs, and especially SUSPENSION. For all my time on this site, I know virtually nothing about the 810 other than it's RWD lol....

Just seeing if I might want to get back into the Maxima game with something more vintage.

Is it swappable to a longitudinal 3.0 or 3.5 out of a Z/G?

yep inline 6 so you have lots of swap options, i would personally go RB20 or RB25.

Suspensionwise i guess theres not any aftermarket, but 82maxtx was using Z31 and Mercedes springs i believe on his 1st gen so you might have to play around

ah, a 1st gen wagon. the wagon would be an awesome choice to get and mod IMO. an andvantage over the sedans is the wagon actually has a live axle in the back compared to the IRS on the 1st gen sedan. to lower it, I guess you could go the cheap route of lowering blocks like any other car with a live axle, if you so choose. the front are the same independent set up, Z31 springs work really well with 1.5 coil cut off the top. as far as motor swaps go....
the L28ET is your best bet as far as being an easy swap, all you have to do really is convert it to a front sump motor like the L24E it has now. datsun made the z-car L's rear sump that way they could move the motor farther back in the engine bay (behind the steering rack / crossmember) for a better front / rear weight distribution. as far as I know the 280zx and the maximas have the same front crossmember.... the big 1st gen sedans was more concerned with ride comfort over performance so it got a front sump L24E. converting an L28ET requires drilling out the oil pick tube boss on the front of the block and the dipstick tube boss. I'm not super famailar with this process, (never done it myself, but maybe in the future) the greytech software site has some info on this I think... the hybrid z forum is a good place to look for info as well. I've read on hybrid z that most anything that will swap into an S130 chassis (280zx) will swap into a 1st gen max, or even the older 810 models. so the sky is the limit on motor swaps really. there is a nice example of such on the JNC forum as well www.japanesenostalgiccar.com
