Faulty torque convertor?

1988 Maxima SE Automatic clutches not are engaging in any gear -including reverse. Transmission only has 20K on it. When turning off the car, a "winding down" sound can be heard from the torque convertor area. Could the splines be stripped where it mates to the input shaft?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes it is possible. We seem to see quite a few maximas with bad converters at our tranny shop.

Well the `88 is being picked up tommorow. I was quoted 600.00 if it's the torque convertor and 1200.00 for a used tranny. I will post as things progress.

I agree. That's what I thought. That also includes the labor. After paying 2300.00 (at 175K) then 2500.00 (at 205K) for 2 previous rebuilds, I'd be more than willing to dump that tranny. I have 228K now. If I can only get 20-30K out of that case, then it's time for it to go (that's assuming that the torque convertor is good). It would make me think that somethings horked in the valave body or something. I still think that the torque convertor IS bad, but we'll see.

have the shop install a Transgo shift kit. It will help make the tranny last longer and be more durable. The kit also helps fix some of the problems with this transmission.

Does this cause a stiffer shift thus making the clutches last longer?

Torque converter WAS bad

I'm picking up the Maxima on Monday. I had a used tranny put in because when the torque converter stripped it left lots of metal in the tranny.
