Automatic to 5 speed

Hey everyone i was just wondering if it would really be worth it performance wise to put a 5 speed transmission in my 92 Maxima SE. I know its gonna cost a couple grand but i like 5 speeds but i would also like your opinions. Also 3 problems that i would like you to comment on if you know how to fix them. My Rear driver side window broke and wont move either up or down now. The next is every so often whenever the car is idling at a stop light or just parked with the engine on, it will cut off without warning. The next is im also experiencing a funny thing when accelerating the car will start to accelerate but then the rpms will drop and bounce from about 2k rpm to 3k rpm and back down continously until i let off the accelerator. If you know of ways to fix these problems or wanna comment on the possible tranny change please post

the 5 speed swap might not be worth it, depends on how much you care to spend, you window...the window regulator has gone bad. Common problem in our cars.

There's a ton of info about the problems you are having. Try doing some searching. Your window regulator is probably broken (mine is too right now) Ordering a new one from CourtesyNissan would be the way to go. Its much easier to just go find another 92 SE that is a 5 speed already, the only reason I would do this would be if I already put a lot of work into the car and just wanted a new project to do. A lot of VE's have the problem with hesitation and power loss especially in warm weather. Basically you need to search for this stuff, could be a lot of things. I'm going to be replacing a few sensors soon and doing a tune up to see what is causing my heat soak problem. Good luck.

BTW When I first joined the org and was just lurking while I did a lot of reading up on my car, I was thinking that everyone is so quick to yell "Search!" But now after just two months I see why you guys do it.

yea its the window regulator in your rear driver side window...about the 5 speed swap if your crazy about it go for it, my opinion - id love to have this in 5 speed but with the work, $, time, labor involved im hesitant about it...when/if my auto eventually dies i MAY consider it at that time

i have a question if anyone can answer. for all us auto people whos trannies die, would it be cheaper to do a swap or a rebuild? i remember my rebuild cost me $1800 or so. even if it does cost a little more would it be worth not have to worry about rebuilding it again?

When I got my car I changed the oil and put an OEM oil filter and fuel filter in. Then got the engine coolant flushed. If you just got your car and don't know the previous maintenance history, its a good idea to get a tune up. Spark plugs, air filter, pcv valve... they can all be replaced very inexpensively.

if i couldn't find a 5-speed i would change it. i just rebuilt my 5-speed just recently and put the thing in with my dad and i, just laid it on my chest and lifted it in there. here's a link to convert an auto to a 5-speed for a 4th gen. should be pretty much the same and give you an idea of what would need to be done. http://www.css.tayloru.edu/~hheiner/...autoto5spd.htm

I started checking into a 5spd swap for my VG. The best price I could find was $1100 including my auto as core. He said he did these swaps all the time. I don't know about that.

I started to consider it, but I just rebuilt my auto about 20,000 miles ago and I couldn't justify spending that amount of money if there's nothing wrong with my auto (and there's not).

If I were you, I would do the conversion if you had to go through a rebuild.
